Previously, patient NVT (53 years old) was hospitalized in critical condition: a large foreign object was deeply embedded in the left neck, moving with the heartbeat, bright red blood spurted strongly, blood pressure dropped, pulse was rapid and breathing was difficult.
According to the patient's family, while operating a wood cutter, Mr. T was hit by a sharp piece of wood that flew out with great force and stuck straight into his neck. His family immediately took him to Thanh Hoa General Hospital.
At the Emergency Center, doctors quickly performed initial first aid, controlled bleeding, and took X-rays and CT scans of the neck and chest. The CT scan results showed a 15cm-long wooden object penetrating straight into the neck, piercing the left common carotid artery, close to the aortic arch - where many large blood vessels are concentrated. If not handled properly, just a small mistake can cause the patient to bleed profusely and die immediately.

The doctors quickly called for consultation from the departments of Neurosurgery - Thoracic, Anesthesia and Resuscitation and transferred the patient to the emergency operating room.
In the operating room, the surgical team decided to open the sternum to access and control the injury. This is an extremely complex technique, requiring absolute precision to be able to remove the foreign object without further damaging the blood vessels.
After more than 3 hours of intense surgery, doctors successfully removed a sharp wooden object measuring 1cm x 15cm from the patient's neck. The torn artery was quickly sutured, ensuring blood circulation again.
After the surgery, the patient recovered quickly: vital signs were stable, and there was no risk of bleeding. Three days later, Mr. T was awake, had good blood pressure, could talk and move around easily. After more than a week of treatment, the patient was discharged from the hospital to reunite with his family.
