Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee, Mr. Nguyen Van Lanh said that in November 2014, the Vietnam Heritage Tree Council recognized 3 tree species in Cu Lao Cham as Vietnam Heritage Trees, including a red parasol tree in Hon Lao with an age of over 100 years.

In April 2015, the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment affixed a plaque recognizing the Vietnam Heritage Tree to a group of three ancient red parasol trees at Tinh stream slope, Bai Lang village, with ages ranging from 155 to 250 years.

The “Cu Lao Cham - Red Corn Season” Festival is a key cultural and tourism event of the “Hoi An - Summer Emotions - 2024” program, lasting from May to August 2024, associated with the 15th anniversary of the Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve.

This year, the festival is even more honored and proud when the craft of weaving hammocks on Cu Lao Cham is recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The humanistic and artistic values ​​of Ngo Dong hammock weaving

The craft of weaving cotton hammocks not only shows the close connection of islanders with the land, sea and forest, but also contains profound human values. Cotton hammocks are works of art with delicate structures, containing the sentiments of the land and people of Cu Lao Cham.

The recognition of the national intangible cultural heritage for the craft of weaving parasol hammocks is a recognition and honor of the traditional craft, the creativity of local people in preserving, transmitting and developing the craft. This also contributes significantly to preserving cultural identity, developing tourism and building the image of hospitality of island residents.

The keeper of the hammock weaving profession Ngo Dong

Artisan Nguyen Thi Quy, 85 years old, shared that for generations, the people of Cu Lao Cham have known how to utilize the parasol tree to make durable and convenient hammocks. Through many generations, the craft of weaving parasol hammocks has become a unique and proud traditional craft of the residents here.

The decision to recognize the craft of weaving hammocks from Cu Lao Cham as a national intangible cultural heritage is an important step forward in preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values ​​of the locality. This is also an opportunity to promote and develop tourism, bringing the image of Cu Lao Cham and its unique cultural values ​​to a large number of domestic and foreign tourists.
