This morning, August 9th, the Hanoi National University Examination Center announced the sample test questions for the 2025 High School Student Competency Assessment Test (HSA). The sample questions are designed for students studying the new high school curriculum who will be taking the exams starting in 2025.

A question from the mathematics and data processing section of the HSA 2025 sample exam.
The exam structure consists of two compulsory sections and one optional section. The two compulsory sections include 50 questions on mathematics and data processing, and 50 questions in the field of literature and language.
The third section allows candidates to choose between science or English. The time allotted for the third section is 60 minutes. Candidates choose 3 out of 5 topics: physics, chemistry, biology, history, and geography; each topic has 17 questions (including 1 test question) to complete the science section. The English section consists of 50 objective multiple-choice questions designed for admission to foreign language programs.
Incorrect answers do not result in point deductions.
The HSA exam consists of approximately 75% multiple-choice questions with four options and 25% fill-in-the-blank questions. From 2025 onwards, the HSA exam will include cluster-based questions across all sections and topics.
Cluster questions consist of a common topic and individual questions designed to assess candidates' abilities from low to high levels. These cluster questions will utilize a wealth of data, evaluating students' thinking in specific and cross-disciplinary areas. This represents a qualitative change in the construction of question banks for competency assessment exams.
The sample exam provides information on question formats and exam structure to help students develop study plans that meet the exam requirements. The Hanoi National University Examination Center opened the online exam portal for candidates to take practice tests on computers starting September 1st.
In both the sample and official exams, the questions are not arranged from easy to difficult but are randomly shuffled according to a fixed matrix. Candidates take the sample exams to familiarize themselves with the exam format, review and supplement their knowledge and skills, and practice time management during the exam.
The test score is calculated based on the total number of correct answers; incorrect answers do not result in point deductions. In the official test, the score will be displayed on the computer after the candidate completes all sections of the test. Most universities that use aptitude test results may accept applications based on the total test score.
However, some schools may have additional requirements regarding the topics chosen in the science section (part 3). The English section is designed to assess foreign language proficiency for admission to foreign language training programs.
