According to Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, in August 2024, the Department issued a document guiding the preparation for the 2025 10th grade entrance exam.
According to the plan, the exam format and content will be announced in September. In October 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will release sample exam questions for each subject in the 10th grade entrance exam.
The 2025 entrance exam for 10th grade in Ho Chi Minh City will remain stable with three subjects: Literature, Mathematics, and Foreign Language. This will also be the first entrance exam under the 2018 General Education Program.

Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, Nguyen Van Hieu.
"However, the level of differentiation and innovation in the exam questions for each subject will be calculated and adjusted by the Department to suit teaching and learning in the direction of assessing students' competencies - closely adhering to the goals of the 2018 General Education Program at the lower secondary level," Mr. Hieu said.
According to Mr. Hieu, publishing sample exam questions early aims to help teachers and schools have a direction in innovating teaching and assessment methods, closely following the approach of evaluating students' competencies.
The Department will replace the specialized 10th-grade exam subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, and Geography, with specialized subjects in Natural Sciences and History-Geography, in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program at the lower secondary level. The Department will provide specific guidance on this matter so that teachers and students can prepare early.
"The approach of conducting entrance exams for 10th grade based on student competency assessment is not new to Ho Chi Minh City, as the city has consistently pursued this goal for the past 10 years," the Director of the Department of Education and Training emphasized.
For the 2024-2025 school year, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will strengthen its guidance on teaching, testing, and evaluation at the lower secondary level, ensuring consistency and uniformity in accordance with the objectives of the 2018 General Education Program.
"In addition, the Department of Education and Training will conduct a comparative assessment of output at the lower secondary level according to the required learning outcomes of the 2018 General Education Program. At the end of grade 9, in each subject, students will have achieved the required learning outcomes set out in the new program," a representative from the Department of Education and Training stated.
