The new lizard species has the scientific name Cyrtodactylus hangvaensis. This species is locally known as Hang Va finger gecko, because it was discovered in Va cave.
Accordingly, recently, the Management Board of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park (Quang Binh) said that a new species of lizard was just discovered in Va cave by Vietnamese scientists.
It is known that the research team accidentally discovered the Va cave lizard clinging to the cliff when night fell.
This new lizard species is nearly 13cm in size with large eyes, a triangular head, and green color. This is the fourth species of toe lizard discovered in the World Natural Heritage Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.
The Va cave gecko was described in a biodiversity research project at Son Doong Cave, led by Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Lien (Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Museum of Nature).

New species of lizard, a wild animal, discovered in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Quang Binh province.
Va Cave is the first and only place to date where this species of wildlife has been found. The study was published in Zootaxa, an international scientific journal for taxonomists.
Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park is home to an extremely diverse and rich flora and fauna system with 2,953 plant species and 1,394 wildlife species.
Among them, there are 43 new species discovered for science and many rare species, indicator species for the forest ecosystem on limestone mountains.
In August 2024, scientists will have a specific report to the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board on the topic of biodiversity research in Son Doong Cave.
