Initial results

Since the program "Meeting Gia Lai - Japan 2022" held in Pleiku City in May 2022, the multi-dimensional connection has been promoted by the Japan-Vietnam Exchange Center and the provincial departments and branches, achieving positive results. Currently, there are Japanese enterprises negotiating to sign cooperation agreements to import goods from a number of Gia Lai enterprises and cooperatives such as: Vinh Hiep, BaKa, Tam Ba, Hai Binh, Phuong Di Bee...

In February 2025, NK HOLDINGS Co., Ltd. cooperated with the ASEAN Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion in Japan to organize a seminar on Vietnamese agricultural products in Japan. Through the seminar, typical products of Gia Lai have reached the Japanese market and there has been initial cooperation between the two sides.

Ms. Tran Thi Hoang Anh - Director of Phuong Di Bee Honey Cooperative (Ia Kenh Commune, Pleiku City) said: "After sending samples to Japan, the partner highly appreciated the quality of pure honey products and agreed on the price. However, they requested to diversify packaging specifications and packaging designs, instead of packaging with a capacity of 500-1,000 ml as present, they need smaller capacity samples, suitable for consumer needs".

According to Ms. Hoang Anh, up to now, Gia Lai honey has only been exported in raw form, so the value is not high. If exported directly under a brand name, the value is 4-5 times higher than selling raw. The successful negotiation to export honey to Japan has opened up new market opportunities for Gia Lai honey products.

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Hagiwara Kristina - Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of NK HOLDINGS Co., Ltd (Japan) said: “NK HOLDINGS is a company specializing in importing and exporting agricultural products for the Japanese, European and some Asian markets such as Singapore, Malaysia... Through the process of working with Gia Lai from November 2024 to present, I have realized that Gia Lai has a fairly large raw material area for production according to standards and many large processing factories with products that meet export standards to Japan as well as some other markets.

This trip to Gia Lai (from March 18 to 20) was to survey the market and support businesses in Gia Lai to promote their products. Previously, on February 21, the Company coordinated with a number of units in Japan to support Gia Lai businesses to participate in an event in Tokyo. Surprisingly, all Gia Lai products such as: L'amant Café, BaKa Coffee, Hai Binh Gia Lai Cashews, Phuong Di Honey were all highly appreciated and qualified to enter the Japanese market as high-quality finished products.

Support to bring products to Japanese market

At a recent meeting with the Department of Industry and Trade, Mr. Shiratori Sho - Director of the Japan-Vietnam Exchange Center - said: To promote trade for Gia Lai products, we brought a number of businesses to survey the growing areas and learn about the potential and strengths of the province.

We look forward to receiving cooperation and support from departments and branches in implementing investment and trade activities. Through the working program, we realize that the potential for developing processed agricultural products in Gia Lai is very large. To support trade promotion, it is expected that in June 2025, the Center will coordinate with relevant units to propose organizing a trade promotion program to Japan in Gia Lai".

In addition to surveying and learning about raw material sources and manufacturing plants, during this trip, Japanese enterprises also took some product samples from manufacturers in Gia Lai such as An Thang pepper, Hung Nguyen dried fruit, etc. At the same time, the delegation also worked with enterprises and cooperatives to guide the standards and regulations of Japanese importers.

Mr. Pham Van Binh - Director of the Department of Industry and Trade - said: According to the Japan-Vietnam Exchange Center, Gia Lai products are highly appreciated by Japanese partners. When directly approaching these products, they changed their thinking about Gia Lai agricultural products. Japan is an extremely demanding market with strict standards and very high demands. Once a business chooses to exclusively distribute Gia Lai products in the Japanese market, it means that they focus on quality.

“At the working session with the Department of Industry and Trade, the Japanese delegation also discussed the plan to develop the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia agricultural belt; in which, Gia Lai is the main production center to supply high-quality agricultural products to the Japanese market in the form of final products.

This is a positive signal and a driving force for businesses to target this market. Therefore, first of all, producers must change their farming mindset, apply science and technology, produce according to quality standard processes, and at the same time create a large-volume source of goods to meet orders.

In addition, manufacturers also need to diversify packaging designs and product packaging specifications according to different weights and capacities to meet the needs of retail chains, restaurants and hotels in Japan. If our processed agricultural products can penetrate the Japanese market, it will be easier to reach many other markets in the world," the Director of the Department of Industry and Trade emphasized.
