TPO - According to statistics from the Higher Education Database System built and managed by the Ministry (HEMIS), in 2024, the whole country will have 743 professors working at higher education institutions.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education, said that statistics from higher education institutions and pedagogical colleges show that the number of full-time lecturers in the last 3 years is as follows:

Thus, the number of junior professors working in higher education institutions increased compared to 2023 but was still lower than in 2022. The number of associate professors was more than 5,600 people, an increase of nearly 400 people compared to 2023.
Meanwhile, there are still more than 6,000 lecturers with university degrees. The number of lecturers with doctoral degrees over the past three years (2022 - 2024) has increased but slowly.
Ms. Thuy assessed that the autonomy mechanism allows schools to promote recruitment and personnel work towards improving quality.
Some schools proactively develop job placement plans, are proactive in recruitment, and sign employment contracts with lecturers with doctoral degrees and research capabilities; at the same time, they arrange, restructure, and reduce the number of staff recruited for civil servant, administrative, and service positions.
Despite positive results in staff development, the rate of lecturers receiving advanced training domestically and abroad under Project 89 (Decision No. 89/QD-TTg dated January 18, 2019 of the Prime Minister approving the Project on Improving the capacity of teachers and managers of higher education institutions to meet the requirements of fundamental and comprehensive innovation in education and training in the period 2019-2030) is low compared to the Project's target. In 2022 and 2023, the number of people receiving doctoral training domestically and abroad under Project 89 is low: domestically under 50%, abroad under 70%.
But there is a positive sign for ensuring the quality of the teaching staff for higher education institutions: the scale of doctoral training has begun to increase sharply in all majors compared to 2023, in which the strongest increase must be mentioned in the majors of Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science and Information Technology, Engineering Technology, Engineering, Production and Processing, Architecture and Construction, ... an increase of 637 doctoral students (NCS) with an increase rate of 33.32% compared to 2023; The majors of Life Sciences and Natural Sciences increased by 390 NCS with an increase rate of 57.52%; The majors of Teacher Training increased by 350 NCS with an increase rate of 51.32%,..
