According to Principal Tran Thi Minh Chung, the school has implemented many solutions to improve students' English communication skills such as: Organizing teaching and learning to connect students in the whole school with domestic schools and connecting with 6 countries in the world (Canada, Romania, India, Germany, Bangladesh, Malaysia); Organizing English lessons in connection with the "Borderless Classroom" model, maintaining good English communication club activities, organizing English topics, MC competitions, storytelling in English, regularly letting students communicate with foreign teachers and participate in English competitions and exchanges...

"The diverse and rich English extracurricular activities create a positive English learning environment for students. Teachers and students use English commands in their studies and communication regularly. Thanks to that, students are confident and enjoy communicating in English with foreigners. Teachers regularly interact with teachers at centers to practice English communication for students and teachers in the school. Up to now, most of the school's students have been bold and confident in communicating in English with foreigners. Many students have good communication skills, especially students in grades 4 and 5. Some students are able to host programs in English," said teacher Tran Thi Minh Chung.

This female principal emphasized that students can learn English well thanks to the very important companionship of parents. When receiving the response of parents, the movement of learning English in schools will develop strongly.

Building a practical and diverse English learning environment

According to teacher Tran Thi Mai Khanh, Head of English at Bac Cuong Primary School, Lao Cai City (Lao Cai Province), making English the second language in schools is a suitable policy as well as an important step in the current context of globalization.

"Using English not only helps students improve their language skills but also opens up opportunities to learn, access knowledge and world culture. I think this is completely feasible if there is investment in infrastructure, teaching staff, changes in teaching methods, close coordination between management levels, schools, and families to create an effective learning environment and encourage students to use English in communication and learning."

According to the experience of teacher Tran Thi Mai Khanh, innovation in teaching methods is a decisive factor in helping students improve their ability to use English effectively. "Traditional teaching methods sometimes only focus on memorizing vocabulary and grammar, but lack the ability to apply them in real-life communication. If teachers apply creative, interactive and hands-on teaching methods, students will have the opportunity to develop their ability to use English in real-life situations.

Sharing about solutions to improve students' English communication, according to Ms. Mai Khanh, first, it is necessary to improve the quality of teachers by training and fostering English teachers in teaching methods and techniques, being creative in teaching methods, taking students as the center, encouraging students to communicate and use English in practice.

"In addition, providing appropriate facilities and student numbers, building classrooms to ensure English teaching and learning, with no more than 25 students per class. At the same time, increasing English learning hours in schools, such as: Increasing the number of English learning hours in the curriculum, especially communication and practice hours so that students can use English regularly. Applying out-of-class learning models such as English clubs, international exchange activities, or online lessons with native teachers.

In particular, it is necessary to use technology to support learning, such as encouraging students to use online English learning tools, grammar and vocabulary learning software, and foreign language learning applications to practice anytime, anywhere.

Organize online lessons with native teachers so that students can be exposed to the intonation and communication style of native speakers. Pay attention to support policies, timely reward teachers and students with achievements, and evaluate and adjust English teaching programs to suit each region as well as students.

As a freelance English teacher for many years, Ms. Vu Hoai Phuong (HCMC) shared from practical experience that in order for students to acquire English well, she has built her own curriculum suitable for each group of students; ensuring that she not only teaches grammar and vocabulary but also focuses on listening, speaking, reading, writing and real-life communication skills with foreigners. This practical lesson has become the motivation for her students to try harder every day.

"In my opinion, in addition to a systematic program, schools can research and organize the teaching of some subjects in English to increase students' interest. To do this, schools need to have modern foreign language classrooms, computers, projectors, electronic boards; diverse learning materials, software, and online English learning applications... to create an attractive and convenient learning environment for students to study anytime, anywhere" - Ms. Hoai Phuong expressed.

4 solutions to make English a second language in schools

To make English the second language in schools, Dr. Dam Quang Minh, Deputy General Director of Equest Group, proposed 4 solutions:

Firstly, it is necessary to complete the legal corridor with clearer and more specific regulations on the implementation of English training programs, especially bilingual programs.

Second, there needs to be systematic and synchronous investment in teacher training, improving the quality of programs, teaching materials and facilities.

Third, it is necessary to encourage the application of technology platforms in teaching and learning English, especially in remote areas.

Finally, it is necessary to strengthen public-private cooperation, promote sharing of experiences and effective English training models between public and private schools.

"We can also combine two major lessons from Singapore and India : Learning from Singapore's national English programs, and learning from India's use of technology to develop remote, isolated, and disadvantaged areas. When we improve English in all areas, the entire system will benefit from that foundation," said Dr. Dam Quang Minh.
