Since 2012, Mr. Le Hung Anh's family (village 5, Nghia Hung commune) has had a high income thanks to applying the model of raising chickens combined with raising calcium worms and growing coffee according to a closed cycle process.

He said: After a study tour to learn from the circular agriculture model in Cu Chi district (Ho Chi Minh City), he applied it to his family's production. Accordingly, on an area of 5 hectares, he used 4 hectares to grow coffee, the rest to make chicken coops and calcium worms. Each year, he raises 3 batches of chickens with about 15,000 chickens. He uses chicken manure to raise calcium worms as chicken feed and uses fertilizer from raising calcium worms to take care of the coffee garden.

“I earn about 150 million VND/year from raising chickens. However, thanks to taking advantage of a large amount of fertilizer from raising calcium worms composted with coffee husks, each year, I save nearly 300 million VND on buying fertilizer compared to before.

Thanks to organic fertilizers, the coffee garden grows well and produces higher yields. In 2024 alone, the coffee garden produced 17.7 tons of beans, sold at 132.2 thousand VND/kg, the family earned more than 2.3 billion VND. Due to low investment costs thanks to taking advantage of organic fertilizer sources from farming and livestock, the family earned nearly 2 billion VND in profit," said Mr. Le Hung Anh.

Mr. Bui Ngoc Hung's family (village 3, Hoa Phu commune) also increased their profits by applying a closed-loop model in cultivation and livestock farming. He said: His family grows 5 sao of coffee and 5 sao of durian. With the guidance of the District Farmers' Association, in 2022, he built more barns to raise chickens and earthworms to earn more income from selling chickens and using organic fertilizer to take care of the garden.

Accordingly, each year, he raises about 300 chickens. During the raising process, he uses chicken manure to raise earthworms, then uses earthworms as chicken feed and fertilizer for the garden.

“Thanks to applying this model, I have significantly reduced the cost of buying chicken feed; at the same time, reduced the cost of buying fertilizer to take care of the garden by 1/4. In addition, the coffee and durian gardens are cared for organically, so they achieve high productivity. In 2024, 5 sao of coffee will yield 2.5 tons of beans, 5 sao of durian will harvest 1.5 tons of fruit. With this model, I earn more than 300 million VND/year, much higher than previous years,” Mr. Hung shared.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Vo Xuan Bao - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Chu Pah district - informed: With the support of Farmers' Associations at all levels in the province, the whole district has 1,700 households applying agricultural waste treatment techniques to provide input materials for cultivation and livestock farming according to the circular agricultural production process.

Of which, about 90% of households have achieved high efficiency with models such as: raising calcium worms combined with raising chickens on biological bedding; raising earthworms combined with raising chickens and growing coffee; raising chickens on thick biological bedding; applying fermentation techniques of crop by-products as animal feed... With these models, people reduce investment costs as well as create safe, high-quality agricultural products.

“In the coming time, the District Farmers’ Association will continue to focus on promoting and mobilizing farmer members to apply methods of converting waste in cultivation and livestock farming into input materials to reduce costs and increase profits; at the same time, minimize the use of waste products and raw materials of chemical origin in cultivation, processing and preservation.

In addition, gradually forming and developing production chains associated with product consumption, quality management, food safety, contributing to forming a mindset of clean, high-quality agricultural production, towards sustainable production development for farmer members in the area" - Chairman of the District Farmers' Association emphasized.
