This year, the first batch of candidates studying under the new general education program will take the high school graduation exam. According to regulations, candidates will take two compulsory subjects: Math and Literature and two elective subjects out of nine subjects, including: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, and Technology.
With the above number of subjects and selection methods, 36 combinations can be used for university admission. To adapt to the innovation in the number of subjects and exam formats, many universities have adjusted the admission combinations.
For example: Hanoi University of Science and Technology added an admission combination called K01 (Math, Literature combined with one of four subjects: Physics/Chemistry/Biology/IT).
Hanoi University of Industry added the combination of A0C (Math, Physics, Technology), A0T (Math, Physics, Information Technology), B0C (Math, Chemistry, Technology), D0C (Math, English, Technology), D0G (Math, English, Economic Education and Law).
The Academy of Journalism and Communication offers new combinations: Literature, English, Economic and Legal Education; Literature, English, Informatics; Literature, Mathematics, Informatics; Literature, Mathematics, Economic and Legal Education; Literature, History, Informatics; Literature, History, Economic and Legal Education.

Universities are adding new admission combinations: What does the Ministry of Education and Training say? (Illustration photo)
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son said that changing the admission combination is not a big problem, because this year's admission regulations will be flexible. Candidates' job is to study according to their abilities and strengths, while schools will enroll students according to their requirements, and the software system will select the best information for candidates.
"It is expected that this year there will be no limit on the number of admission combinations, candidates will focus on studying well according to their own abilities and strengths," Deputy Minister Son said. Higher education institutions will have to enroll students according to combinations suitable for their training majors and requirements. The Ministry of Education and Training also sets out specific requirements for each school and training major.
Accordingly, for each major, schools will choose the admission method as well as the combination of subjects for the entrance exam that is suitable for the requirements of that major. How to ensure that qualified candidates can choose to study and succeed in this program.
The Ministry of Education and Training is expected to have specific regulations. For example, for each major, there will be common parts between the admission combinations. The common parts are the mandatory requirements that candidates must have to study the program. The decision on which subjects to choose is the right of the schools to ensure autonomy.
Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son advised candidates not to worry, just study well, try to participate in exams, especially the high school graduation exam to achieve the highest results. The software system and regulations will create favorable conditions so that students do not have to worry about technical issues.
All data on enrollment, from high school academic results, high school graduation exam results, individual exam results, etc., are uploaded to the system database. Based on that, the system will select appropriate and optimal enrollment methods for candidates. That is, students can set their preferences for a major or a school, and the general enrollment support system will automatically select the most optimal one for them.
Regarding the information that schools must convert university admission methods to the same scale, Deputy Minister Son said that there are currently two standard scores: According to high school graduation exam scores and other standard scores (such as academic transcript scores or scores from thinking and capacity assessment exam results).
The Ministry's leaders analyzed that there must be equivalence between these two benchmarks, and that it cannot be based on the number of quotas set by the schools. Therefore, converting or determining these two benchmarks to be equivalent is very necessary to ensure fairness for candidates with equivalent abilities.
The Ministry of Education and Training is working with a number of universities to develop guidelines to ensure consistency in the system while ensuring diversity in autonomy according to the requirements of each profession.
Regarding the abolition of early admission, the Deputy Minister of Education and Training said that while previously students had to participate in many admission exams, this year candidates only need to focus on one exam. At the same time, students must consider their own abilities to choose a suitable career.
Believing that at this point in time, choosing a career is not just a personal decision, Deputy Minister Son advised students to carefully consider their passion, abilities and the practical needs of society in the future. Students should proactively equip themselves with necessary skills such as foreign languages, digital skills, critical thinking and a spirit of lifelong learning to continuously improve.
According to the draft university admission regulations for 2025, the subject combination used for admission includes at least 3 subjects suitable to the characteristics and requirements of the training program; of which there must be Math or Literature with the assessment weight accounting for at least 1/3 of the total score. Combinations in the same major must have common subjects accounting for at least 50% of the total score.
