White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said on August 12 that US President Joe Biden supports the idea of abolishing the tax on tips for service industry workers, as well as raising the minimum wage. Speaking at a press conference, White House spokeswoman Jean-Pierre affirmed that President Biden fully supports this idea. The statement was made just two days after Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for US president, announced her support for abolishing the tax on tips for service and hotel industry workers. Speaking at a campaign rally in Nevada - a western state that could play an important role in the election on November 5, Ms. Harris pledged that if elected president, she would continue to fight for working families, including raising the minimum wage and eliminating the tax on tips for service and hotel industry workers. Harris's views are similar to those of her Republican rival, Donald Trump, in attracting support from voters in the service and hospitality industries. This is a rare similarity between the two presidential candidates. In a statement posted on the social media platform Truth Social, former President Donald Trump accused his opponent Harris of "copying" his policy proposal. Previously, in June, Trump announced that he would exempt tips from income tax for service industry employees if elected to the White House. Under current law, tips are also considered taxable income. Therefore, eliminating taxes on this amount of money will also partly affect the US budget revenue. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB - an independent and non-profit financial watchdog organization) in the US estimates that eliminating the tip tax for service and hotel workers, as well as increasing the minimum wage, could add between $100 billion and more than $200 billion to the US budget deficit over 10 years. According to the US Department of Labor, as of 2022, about 2.2 million people in this country are working as service workers, in which tips are an important part of monthly income.
