2024 Olympic Medal Table: US Overtakes China as Top Team

(Dan Tri) - As of 7:00 a.m. on August 5, the US sports delegation rose to the top of the medal table for the first time at the 2024 Paris Olympics after 9 days of competition.
On the competition day yesterday (August 4), the US sports delegation reaped 5 more gold medals. They now lead the medal rankings with 19 gold medals, 26 silver medals, and 26 bronze medals. The five gold medals of the US delegation belonged to athletes Noah Lyles (track and field), Kristen Faulkner (cycling), Scottie Scheffler (golf), Bobby Finke (swimming), and the 4x100m medley relay team. This is the second consecutive day at the 2024 Olympics that the US sports delegation won 5 gold medals.

The Chinese sports delegation also won 3 more gold medals to equal the number of gold medals of the US, but was pushed down to 2nd place when it was less than the number of silver and bronze medals (19 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze). However, both the US and China have separated from the group when they are far behind the 3rd place on the rankings held by host France with 12 gold, 14 silver and 18 bronze medals. Standing in the next positions in the top 10 are Australia, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany. Up to this point, there are 70 sports delegations that have won medals at the 2024 Olympics, of which 43 have gold medals. The Philippines continues to have another gold medal in gymnastics, temporarily ranking 21st on the rankings. The two delegations Indonesia and Malaysia each have 1 bronze medal, ranking 61st.

Yesterday, racer Nguyen Thi That represented Vietnam in the women's 158km road cycling event. Despite her efforts, the An Giang native could not create a surprise and finished 73rd out of 93 racers with a time of 4 hours 10 minutes 47 seconds, officially saying goodbye to the Olympics. The Vietnamese sports delegation has only two athletes left to compete in the 2024 Olympics: Trinh Van Vinh (weightlifting) on August 7 and Nguyen Thi Huong (canoeing) on August 8.
