Ms. Harris campaigned in Atlanta (Georgia) on July 30.
ABC News reported on August 6 that US Vice President Kamala Harris officially won the majority of votes from delegates in the Democratic Party's online vote to choose a candidate to run for president.
According to the announcement of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), the vote ended on the evening of August 5 (local time) and the results still need to be approved by the convention secretary, Mr. Jason Rae.
Ms. Harris received 4,567 votes of support from delegates, according to the DNC.
"With the support of 99% of delegates voting online, Vice President Harris has historic momentum as we take the final steps to certify her as the party's nominee," said a joint statement from Democratic Party Chair Jaime Harrison and Democratic National Convention Chair Minyon Moore.
Ms. Harris is the first woman of African American and South Asian descent to win a majority of the party's nomination.
In fact, she was considered the party's nominee since August 2, when DNC Chair Jaime Harrison said she had won enough delegates to secure the position.
Ms. Harris is the only candidate to launch a replacement campaign after US President Joe Biden withdrew from the race for the White House. She is also the only candidate to have enough delegate signatures to hold an online vote.
Delegates have been voting by phone or email since 9am on August 1 (local time) and the deadline is 6pm on August 5.
