After winning gold medal with the Dutch men's hockey team at the 2024 Paris Olympics , Duco Telgenkamp had an unsportsmanlike celebration that led to a shocking brawl with the German team.
The men's hockey final (9.8) was tense and the Dutch team tied Germany 1-1, having to enter a penalty shootout. Here, the Dutch team proved to be more excellent to win 3-1, thereby winning the Olympic gold medal. Duco Telgenkamp was the one who made the decisive shot and he easily fooled goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg, sealing the victory for the Dutch team. This was the 10th gold medal of the Dutch hockey team at the Olympic arena. However, when all his teammates were celebrating, Duco Telgenkamp made a shameful move. He walked in front of goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg, made a silent sign and continuously jumped and provoked his opponent. According to The Guardian (UK), Duco Telgenkamp responded to arrogant statements, saying that the Dutch team was afraid of Germany before Jean-Paul Danneberg's match. However, many German players did not accept this action and pushed Duco Telgenkamp, causing the fight to begin. When the incident happened, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was also present in the stands and witnessed it.

Fans in the stadium continued to boo and criticize the unsportsmanlike actions of the Dutch and German teams. On page X (formerly Twitter), many people also asked the Organizing Committee to strip the medals of the players who caused the fight. The commentator of Sky Sport (UK) commented: "From women to men, the hockey event at the Paris Olympics 2024 is making fans angry because of hooliganism. Perhaps when they look back later, they will feel extremely ashamed. The winners are bitter because of criticism and the losers are in the worst mood." Notably, this is the second time a fight has occurred in hockey at the Paris Olympics 2024. On August 8, in the women's semi-final match between China and Belgium, Chinese midfielder Fan Yunxia hit the ball at Daphne Marien even though the referee had blown the whistle to end the match, leading to a fight.

After the match, goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg also spoke about the incident. He said that his opponent had made him experience the most disrespect in his career. Jean-Paul Danneberg said: “I don’t know why a winner behaved so badly. It was a great moment but he was booed by the whole stadium. It is true that I shared some things before the match, but that was my personal opinion. I don’t think that was the cause of such a serious fight. But perhaps the Dutch team thought that what I mentioned was inappropriate. I sincerely apologize for causing my teammates more pain even though the match was over.”
