The UN Security Council said Algeria had requested the meeting after an attack on a school in Gaza City that had been converted into a shelter for Palestinians displaced by the conflict between Israel and Hamas, killing about 100 people.

According to the United Nations Human Rights Office, the Al-Taba'een school, located in the east of Gaza City, was attacked three times during prayers in the early hours of August 10, killing at least 93 Palestinians, including 11 children and 6 women. In addition, dozens of others were injured, mostly children, women and the elderly.
The Israeli military said the school was a haven for at least 20 Hamas and other jihadist militants, including senior commanders. The international community has condemned the airstrike on the school and called for measures to prevent a recurrence.
Meanwhile, the militant group Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for launching a series of explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at a military base in northern Israel. According to the Times of Israel, Hezbollah targeted the Michve Alon base of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) located near the city of Safed, northern Israel on August 10.
Hezbollah said the area was used by the IDF as a troop concentration and ammunition depot. The IDF launched several interceptors at the drones and also attacked missile launchers in the Houla and Khilat al-Daba areas of southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah airstrikes were launched.
Earlier, on August 9, Israel carried out an airstrike on a vehicle in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon, killing Samer Al-Hajj, a “senior commander” of Hamas in Lebanon. Military tensions between Israel and Hezbollah since Israel launched a military campaign against Hamas in October 2023 have killed 350 Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon and more than 100 civilians and 20 soldiers in Israel.
