Việt NamViệt Nam08/08/2024

With 125 km of coastline, Quang Nam province has nearly 20 fishing villages with a rich and unique fishing culture. In recent years, some fishing villages in Quang Nam such as Tan Thanh, Cua Khe, Tam Thanh, Tam Tien... have been building types and products combining the identity of fishing villages with the marine environment, experiential tourism, resort tourism, attracting many tourists, bringing benefits to local residents.

The traditional fish sauce making profession in Cua Khe fishing village, Thang Binh district is a highlight attracting tourists.

For about 3 years now, Cua Khe fishing village (Binh Duong commune, Thang Binh district) has been an attractive destination for tourists who love community tourism and want to experience the simple yet vibrant life of fishermen in coastal areas. Cua Khe village is only about 20 minutes away from Hoi An ancient town, possessing a beautiful, pristine beach with fine white sand, natural casuarina trees, not much affected by urbanization. This place still preserves the typical cultural features of coastal fishing villages, from basket boat riding, fishing, setting traps, pulling nets, and singing "ba trao".

Cua Khe also has a long-standing traditional fish sauce making profession that has been recognized and is also one of 67 cultural tourism resources in Quang Nam province, famous for the folk song "first Cua Khe fish sauce, second Long Phu tea". Every year, in the second lunar month, Cua Khe people organize a solemn and unique fish sauce ancestor worship ceremony that few craft villages can still maintain. Taking advantage of this, some fishing families in the village have boldly invested, learned, opened homestays to welcome guests and organized tourism programs related to local cuisine, such as: Fish sauce factory tours, fish sauce making classes, going to the fish market at dawn, enjoying fresh seafood...

Also making a strong impression on the Quang Nam tourism map is Tan Thanh fishing village (Cam An ward, Hoi An city), with the first 4-star OCOP community tourism service product in the province and also rare in the country. At the end of 2021, Tan Thanh fishing village tourism cooperative was established with main services such as accommodation, resort, cuisine, fishing village experience, fishing village fair, art clubs and notably Tan Thanh fishing village fair held every weekend.

According to Le Quoc Viet, Vice Chairman of Tan Thanh Fishing Village Tourism Cooperative, the development of tourism products here focuses on the community and local residents, based on the foundation of the fishing profession and the cultural identity of the fishing village, with no gap between local people, immigrants and foreign tourists. Thanks to that, despite 2 years of being heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, community activities and tourism services here are still connected and developed.

Many tourism ideas from fishing activities have been supported and implemented effectively by the people such as: Experience tours of net pulling, squid fishing, net weaving, basket boat trips, campfires at the beach or cultural activities such as: Learning to sing Bai Choi, Ho Khoan, dancing, painting, making recycled items...

Within the framework of the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2023, the Tan Thanh fishing village tourism community was honored to receive the ASEAN Community Tourism Award. Coming to the coastal village, a trip is not only about experiencing the scenery and cuisine but also receiving many unique values from the people and coastal lifestyle. Dr. Pham Quoc Quan, member of the National Cultural Heritage Council, shared that the intangible culture in the treasure trove of Vietnam's sea and island cultural heritage is extremely rich and is a foundation for sustainable tourism development, changing and improving people's livelihoods.

“These are the living and working experiences of the residents that have been accumulated and passed down from many generations; the knowledge accumulated and applied through daily life and seasonal production; the beliefs, folk songs, legends, and myths created and integrated from many cultures and civilizations, through many generations due to the advantage of the island location,” Dr. Pham Quoc Quan emphasized.

When mentioning the pioneering fishing village in tourism and early fame in Quang Nam, we cannot ignore the name of Tam Thanh mural fishing village (Tam Ky city). In 2016, the Korea-Vietnam community art exchange project transformed the simple fishing village into the first mural village in Vietnam with more than 100 paintings in people's homes and public spaces. Over time, some murals have faded and deteriorated, but every year the locality coordinates with social organizations and artists to organize painting programs to beautify the village.

Most recently, at the end of May 2024, nearly 20 murals were painted by 120 artists from provinces and cities on the walls of houses in Tam Thanh commune. In addition to the paintings, more than 33 works on basket boats, 50 oars, and many completed sculptures were arranged and displayed. The paintings depicting the world of marine life, fishermen's activities, seascapes at different times of the day... not only attract tourists, but also arouse pride and awareness of environmental protection in generations of residents in the village.

Fishing villages are considered to be places that preserve the identity of fishing communities, exploiting the cultural values of fishing villages as a tourism product is also a way to nurture and preserve local culture. Although there are some good and effective models, fishing village tourism in Quang Nam still has many factors that have not been promoted to their full potential, such as sea festivals and beliefs associated with the sea.

The rapid urbanization that has caused the space of fishing villages and fishing professions to shrink is also a concern for cultural and tourism experts. According to Mr. Ton That Huong, a cultural research expert (former Head of the Department of Cultural Management, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam), places of worship with typical architecture of fishing villages need to be renovated and embellished; events such as the Whale Festival, Long Chu Festival, Fishing Festival, Boat Racing Festival, etc. should be studied, preserved and restored (if necessary), to create an identity that makes tourists want to learn and experience. In addition to infrastructure investment, it is necessary to mobilize people to maintain a green-clean-beautiful ecological environment and promote traditional occupations to serve community tourism.
