Currently, there are about 10 aptitude and thinking assessment exams organized by universities nationwide. Of these, the exams of the two national universities and Hanoi University of Science and Technology attract the most candidates for admission.
Vietnam National University, Hanoi
In 2025, Hanoi National University plans to organize 6 rounds of capacity assessment exams, starting from March to May, with an expected number of 85,000 exams. Currently, about 90 universities use these results for admission.

The structure of the 2025 Hanoi National University's competency assessment exam consists of three parts, of which two are compulsory: Mathematics and Data Processing, Literature - Language. In addition, candidates have the option of Science or English.
Ho Chi Minh City National University
In 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam will take place in two sessions, on March 30 and June 1. This is the largest exam in the country with more than 105 universities using the results for admission.
The structure of the competency assessment test of Ho Chi Minh City National University consists of 3 parts: Language use (60 questions, divided equally between Vietnamese and English), Mathematics (30 questions), and Scientific thinking (30 questions).
Hanoi University of Science and Technology
In 2025, Hanoi University of Science and Technology will organize 3 rounds of thinking assessment exams, each round will have 3-4 testing teams at 30 testing locations.
Specifically, the first round has exam dates of January 18-19, 2025; registration opening date is December 1-6, 2024.
Phase 2 has exam dates of March 8-9, 2025; registration opening date of February 1-6, 2025.
Phase 3 has exam dates of April 26-27, 2025; registration opening date is April 1-6, 2025.
Currently, there are more than 50 universities using the results for admission.
The thinking assessment test of Hanoi University of Science and Technology consists of 3 parts: Mathematical Thinking (60 minutes), Reading Comprehension (30 minutes) and Scientific Thinking/Problem Solving (60 minutes). These are 3 independent test parts, the questions focus on assessing the thinking ability of the candidates in each test part, not directly testing the knowledge of any subject.
Hanoi National University of Education
The 2025 Hanoi National University of Education's competency assessment exam will take place on May 17-18, 2025, with the same 8 subjects as last year: Math, Literature, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, and Geography. There are 22 universities that plan to use the Hanoi National University of Education's competency assessment exam scores for admission in 2025, an increase of 13 schools compared to last year.
The exam is expected to be held at 4 locations, including Hanoi National University of Education, Vinh University, Quy Nhon University and University of Education - Da Nang University.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Education
In 2025, the specialized competency assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education will continue to be conducted with 6 independent exams: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, English. The content of the exam covers about 70-80% of grade 12 knowledge, the rest is grade 10 and 11 curriculum. Candidates can register for one or more exams, depending on their needs and admission combinations.
The school plans to hold multiple exams in Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Da Nang, and Gia Lai. Eight other schools use these exam scores for admission.
Hanoi National University of Education 2
2025 is the first year that Hanoi National University of Education 2 will organize its own entrance exam and use the results of its own exam for university admission. The school has not yet announced the plan to organize this exam. However, this will be an exam that assesses capacity.
Schools under the Ministry of Public Security
The Ministry of Public Security will organize an assessment exam from 2022, combining the scores of this exam with the high school graduation exam scores to select candidates. In 2025, the Ministry of Public Security plans to change the exam structure. Specifically, the exam will consist of three parts: mandatory essay (including a social argument question), mandatory multiple choice (Math, History, Foreign Language) and optional multiple choice.
In the optional multiple choice test, candidates choose one of the following subjects: Physics (CA1), Chemistry (CA2), Biology (CA3), Geography (CA4). About 70% of the test content will be from grade 12, the rest will be from grade 10 and 11.
Schools under the Ministry of National Defense
The military school block plans to organize a separate competency assessment exam. The exam format will be computer-based with the same test as the Hanoi National University is conducting, but only for those applying to the military.
The exam will test comprehensive knowledge including Math, Literature, Foreign Language, Natural Science and Social Science. Military schools are expected to reserve a maximum of about 30% of the admission quota for competency assessment.
In addition, in the 2025 admissions season, a total of 18 universities will organize admissions using the computer-based entrance assessment test (V-SAT). The test content is within the high school curriculum, mainly the grade 12 curriculum (about 90% of knowledge is from the grade 12 curriculum and 10% is from the grade 10 and 11 curriculum).
The exam has independent subjects, including: Math, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography. From 2025, the V-SAT exam will have an additional Literature subject with a combination of objective multiple choice and computer-based essay writing.
