The US Justice Department on August 6 charged a Pakistani man with ties to the Iranian government with attempting to carry out political assassinations. According to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Mr. Trump and US government officials were the intended targets of this plot.
Asif Merchant, 46, is accused of traveling to New York City in April 2024 and working with an assassin to carry out the assassinations in late August or early September. Merchant was arrested on July 12 as he was preparing to leave the United States. He is currently in federal custody.

According to court documents, Merchant said he wanted to target individuals in the United States who were “hurting Pakistan and the world and Muslims.” However, a U.S. law enforcement official said investigators have not found evidence that Merchant had any connection to the July 13 assassination attempt on Trump.
According to CNN, the US government has repeatedly raised concerns that Iran could attempt to assassinate Mr. Trump or former advisers of the former President in retaliation for the 2020 US drone strike in which General Qasem Soleimani - a top general of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed.
Meanwhile, according to the spokesman of the Permanent Mission of Iran to the United Nations, Tehran has not received any reports on this issue from the US Government.
