This is the opinion of Ms. Ru Yi - Deputy General Director in charge of International Market (Asia - Pacific region), Trip.com platform - after witnessing the remarkable growth of Vietnam's tourism industry.
New customer sources from Chinese speaking markets
According to Ms. Ru Yi, Vietnam's international tourist sources are currently expanding, no longer depending on a few markets. Previously, the majority of international tourists to Vietnam came from Japan, South Korea and Singapore. However, Trip.com has now recorded a sharp increase in the number of visitors from Taiwan and Hong Kong.
"Instead of relying on just one market, Vietnam now attracts more groups of visitors thanks to its diverse destinations and experiences," said Ms. Ru Yi.
Going into more detail, a representative of this online travel platform said that Singapore and Hong Kong are currently the two markets with the highest penetration rates on the Trip.com platform in the region.
“Since the pandemic, we have become the official implementer of government tourism subsidy programs in these two markets. As a result, our customer reach has increased significantly, and these are now two of our key markets,” Ms. Yu shared.
Among them, Hong Kong has emerged as a potential emerging market, with rapid growth and increasing interest in destinations in Vietnam. Besides the two leading markets, Taiwan and Malaysia are emerging as "second-tier" growth markets with very positive signals.
In particular, the Taiwanese market is assessed to have "a very high quality growth rate", meaning not only an increase in the number of users on this platform, but also a strong increase in spending value and participation in tourism activities.
Long stay thanks to attractive destination
One of the positive signs is that the average length of stay of visitors has increased from 2.2 days to 2.7 days.
According to Ms. Ru Yi, this trend shows that international tourists are spending more time exploring, experiencing and even bringing their families for long-term vacations. This is not only beneficial for the accommodation industry but also boosts tourism spending.
To continue attracting international visitors, according to businesses, Vietnam should remove policy barriers - especially issues related to visa procedures and electronic payments - to create the most favorable conditions for international visitors to Vietnam.
Tourism businesses predict that Vietnam's tourism will not be much affected by the trade war in 2025 while demand remains high. In the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam welcomed more than 6 million foreign visitors, the highest number in years. This could completely push Vietnam's tourism industry to set a record for welcoming international visitors this year.
