From a red land rich in bauxite potential, Dak Nong is gradually rising to become the country's aluminum industrial center, with the goal of forming a modern production chain - from mining, processing to creating high-tech, environmentally friendly products.
Dak Nong is gradually establishing its strategic role on the economic map of Vietnam, with the goal of becoming the bauxite - alumina - aluminum industrial center of the country.
This goal is identified in the province's development orientation and included in the national planning by the Central Government, opening a new chapter for the potential red basalt land.
Dak Nong is a key "core", with many outstanding advantages in terms of bauxite reserves, mining conditions and strategic location.
According to the Planning for exploration, exploitation, processing and use of minerals in the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision 866/QD-TTg dated July 18, 2023 (Decision 866), Vietnam possesses great bauxite potential, mainly concentrated in the Central Highlands region.
In which, Dak Nong and Lam Dong are localities with key roles in the bauxite industry development strategy.
In the period of 2021-2030, Dak Nong will invest in increasing the capacity of Nhan Co Alumina Factory from 650,000 tons/year to 800,000 tons/year.
Regarding bauxite exploration, 19 projects will be implemented by 2030, of which 2 Central Highlands provinces have many projects: Dak Nong 7 projects, Lam Dong 8 projects.
Regarding bauxite mining, by 2030, maintain the design capacity of existing mines, expand and increase the capacity of Tay Tan Rai mine and Nhan Co mine; invest in 4-5 new mining projects in Dak Nong, 2-3 mining projects in Lam Dong.
Regarding processing, by 2030, increase the processing capacity of the two alumina factories Tan Rai (Lam Dong) and Nhan Co (Dak Nong) from 650,000 tons/year to about 2 million tons/year; complete the pilot project of Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant and invest in new aluminum metal production projects in Dak Nong, Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc...
In the period 2031 - 2050, it is expected to reach 12 - 19 million tons of alumina and 2.2 - 2.5 million tons of aluminum metal per year...
Dak Nong strives to have an average industrial production index increase of 20% per year by 2030, becoming the national aluminum industrial center.
In the overall planning, Dak Nong appears as a key "nucleus", with many outstanding advantages in terms of ore reserves, mining conditions and strategic location.
Many areas rich in bauxite resources in the province have been included in the exploration and exploitation planning, including Nhan Co, Tuy Duc, Quang Tin, Nhan Dao, Quang Son, Dak Ha...
In particular, the Nhan Co bauxite-alumina complex in Dak R'lap district, invested by the Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (TKV), is currently operating effectively. This is considered a model in the development of the bauxite deep processing industry.
Not only stopping at mining and processing aluminum, Dak Nong is also planned to develop modern aluminum smelting complexes. Dak Nong will be the key area to implement aluminum and aluminum metal projects, with the orientation of forming the aluminum industrial center of the country.
Many areas rich in bauxite resources in Dak Nong province have been included in the exploration and exploitation planning.
With that spirit, Dak Nong has identified the development of the aluminum industry as an economic goal, a strategy to break through and restructure the local economy. At the 12th Provincial Party Congress (2020-2025), Dak Nong chose to develop the aluminum industry, aluminum smelting and renewable energy as one of the three pillars of economic growth, along with high-tech agriculture and eco-tourism.

If alumina production is the starting step, aluminum smelting is the breakthrough step for Dak Nong to affirm its role as an aluminum industrial center.
To realize this, Dak Nong calls for investment to implement the Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant Project.
This project is expected to help the province shift from exporting raw materials to producing high-value finished products; master aluminum smelting technology, which is a specialized field and requires high technology; and link the aluminum industry with other fields such as energy, new materials, supporting industries, etc.
The Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee has announced 12 bauxite mines as national mineral reserve areas, with a total area of over 354km², widely distributed in localities such as Dak R'lap, Tuy Duc, Dak Song, Dak Glong and Gia Nghia. These are areas with high aluminum content, favorable for mining and processing on an industrial scale.
Bauxite is mined from open-pit red soil areas in Dak R'lap district (Dak Nong).
The announcement of these mines aims to protect valuable resources, lay a clear legal foundation and planning to attract strategic investors. On that basis, the province can proactively grant policies for projects to explore, exploit and process bauxite in a circular and effective manner, linked to the goal of developing a sustainable aluminum industry. Dak Nong strives to grant investment policies for 1-2 bauxite processing plant complex projects by 2025. Before granting investment policies, the province will carefully assess the capacity of investors to ensure the quality, efficiency and feasibility of the projects.

The province is finalizing the Draft Resolution on the development of the bauxite - alumina - aluminum industry, as a legal basis for issuing synchronous policies. Dak Nong reports and proposes to the Politburo, the Government, and the Prime Minister for policies for the province to develop specific mechanisms and policies on the development of the bauxite - alumina - aluminum industry.

In 2025, Dak Nong Aluminum Company - TKV will spend nearly 7.9 billion VND to train and foster professional skills for officers, employees and workers.
One of the clear steps to realize aluminum products right in the area is the Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant Project, invested by Tran Hong Quan Metallurgy Company Limited.
The factory is built in Nhan Co Industrial Park, Dak R'lap district, with an area of 129.42 hectares and a total designed capacity of up to 450,000 tons of aluminum/year, divided into 3 phases.
The control system at many key workshops of Nhan Co Alumina Factory is regularly upgraded.

At the same time, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) has invested in completing the 220kV loop grid system to supply power to the project, ensuring sufficient power for the aluminum electrolysis process - one of the stages requiring the most energy and stability in the production chain.
It is expected that in the second quarter of 2026, the factory will start production phase 1 with a capacity of 150,000 tons of aluminum/year. This project is an important step in producing aluminum metal locally and is a milestone marking Dak Nong's official entry into the complete aluminum production chain, from bauxite mining - alumina processing - aluminum smelting - industrial products.

Along with that, Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (TKV) has proposed and is preparing to deploy the Dak Nong 2 bauxite - alumina - aluminum complex, with a capacity of up to 2 million tons of alumina and 0.5 - 1 million tons of aluminum/year.
This is one of the largest aluminum industrial complexes in Vietnam to date, with a total expected investment for the entire system of related projects of more than 182,000 billion VND.
Transporting alumina products from Nhan Co Alumina Factory to consumption locations
Aluminum production in Dak Nong is an important step to increase the value of resources, reduce dependence on raw material exports and open up the possibility of building a sustainable aluminum industrial value chain.
Besides, this is also an opportunity for the locality to take the lead in the development trend of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and light-green-recycled materials, which are global trends.
