Literature topic is not in textbook

Grade 12 students in the 2024-2025 school year will be the first generation to take the high school graduation exam under the new plan.

Accordingly, each candidate will take 4 subjects including Math, Literature and 2 elective subjects from the remaining subjects including: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology. In which, Literature is in essay form, the remaining subjects are in objective multiple choice form.

In the first year of innovation in the exam plan, the exam has many new points, in which the exam content will closely follow the 2018 General Education program that the 12th grade students next year will access for 3 years from grades 10-12.

From 2025, candidates will take the graduation exam in 4 subjects including Literature, Math and 2 elective subjects in 3 sessions, 1 session less than before.

In particular, the Literature subject will be tested according to the new program, and the materials may be completely outside the textbooks. At that time, students will have to fulfill the requirements on completely new materials, thus ending the speculation about the exam questions and students will no longer be able to learn by rote or study lopsidedly.

To help students and teachers of high schools visualize the exam questions in next year's graduation exam, the Ministry of Education and Training has also announced the exam format structure of each subject. In addition to the familiar 4-answer structure, students choose 1, the Ministry of Education and Training has added new formats including: true or false and short answer.

In the 2024 graduation exam, some subjects and exam questions have questions that are close to next year's exam so that students can get familiar with them.

Next year, the Ministry of Education and Training will continue to be the unit that sets the exam questions and issues instructions for provinces and cities to organize the exam. The exam will be held nationwide at the same time according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Early survey of candidates' wishes

Recently, at the 2024 Department Directors Conference, the Ministry of Education and Training said that the graduation exam from 2025 will be held over 2 days with 3 exam sessions, including 1 Literature exam, 1 Math exam and 1 exam of 2 elective subjects.

Mr. Huynh Van Chuong, Director of the Department of Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training), said that in order to prepare for the exam questions from the new year in an open direction, promoting the collective intelligence of the whole industry, the Ministry of Education and Training has invited domestic and foreign experts to train thousands of teachers and lecturers nationwide on the process, procedures, and methods of building a question bank for the exam.

Based on the results of that training, currently the Departments of Education and Training are deploying teachers to build exam questions according to the new exam format structure to use as a source for building a question bank from 2025.

Next August, the Ministry of Education and Training will evaluate and comment on exam questions developed by units at the grassroots level. This will contribute to improving the quality of exam question development and question banks of teachers in localities as well as promoting the collective intelligence of the entire sector in the work of building open question banks. The Ministry is also implementing the necessary procedures to build a software system to serve the high school graduation exam from 2025.

According to Mr. Chuong, in preparation for next year's exam, the construction of "open" exam question libraries will be carried out, in which the source of questions will be mobilized from teachers nationwide.

After developing the exam questions, the Ministry of Education and Training will conduct large-scale testing in provinces and cities and select good, processed questions to put into the standardized bank. The library/question bank is the basis for developing exam questions for each year.

Based on the subjects announced in the 2025 high school graduation exam plan and the 2018 general education program, there will be up to 36 optional combinations.

To ensure optimal exam room arrangement and minimize candidates' movement, the Ministry of Education and Training requires localities to conduct a survey of candidates' exam registration wishes as early as December and develop exam room plans and arrange for testing. After that, it is possible to plan the exam location arrangement to ensure the principle that candidates taking the same exam combination will sit in the same exam room.
