(kontumtv.vn) – Developing aquaculture in hydroelectric and irrigation reservoirs not only helps people increase their income but also contributes to promoting tourism development in localities. For example, the aquaculture model in the Ya Ly hydroelectric reservoir of Sa Thay district people.

In 2025, Mr. A Ir's family in Cho village, Ia Ly commune, Sa Thay district is a household raising fish in cages with a good income in the locality. He said that from the habit of sleeping in the fields and working in the fields, he has now gradually become accustomed to sleeping in cages, using fishing gear to catch aquatic products and prepare fish feed. This change comes from his participation in fish farming training, receiving support from the locality for cages, breeds and farming techniques. In particular, he was supported by the professional sector to arrange cages close to the cages of an experienced household to learn and follow. This is the basis for him to boldly expand from 2 cages to 5 cages this year. Mr. A Ir said: " When I started raising fish, I found it not too difficult, I knew how to raise, care for and prevent diseases. Next year, I will try harder. I see that selling is also good, earning a few tens of millions of dong each year. Working in the fields and raising fish at the same time contributes to the family's income."

Mr. Tran Lenh Tuyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ya Ly commune, Sa Thay district, said that from above, the fish cage farming area on the Ya Ly hydroelectric reservoir looks like an aquaculture area in the Southwest region with bustling boats and cages, providing many types of high-quality specialty fish, including a 3-star OCOP certified product, dried snakehead fish. In the 2025-2030 plan, Ya Ly commune develops the Ya Ly reservoir aquaculture area into a community tourism destination in Cho village. Mr. Tran Lenh Tuyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ya Ly commune, added: " In previous years, farmers have not applied science and technology to livestock farming, so the growth rate is very slow. In 2024, we have a specialized Resolution on local aquaculture. From 30 fish cages, we now have 52 fish cages. In particular, we have mobilized ethnic minority households. Currently, we have 3 ethnic minority households participating in the fish farming model."

Identifying aquaculture as a suitable direction, Sa Thay district focuses on agricultural and fishery extension work to help farmers expand their aquaculture area. Ms. Le Thi Dung, Director of the Sa Thay District Agricultural Service Center, said that the locality has the advantage of a large water surface area in the two hydroelectric reservoirs of Plei Krong and Ya Ly. Accordingly, the unit advises the district to develop high-quality aquaculture and focuses on building models of aquaculture households for ethnic minorities. In 2025, the aquaculture area of Sa Thay district will reach 135 hectares with a farming output of nearly 420 tons and an exploited output of nearly 400 tons per year. Ms. Le Thi Dung said: “ Previously, people only raised some common types of fish, the center has advised on building some specialty fish such as eel, catfish, and snakehead fish. Introducing some of these types of fish will help people have higher income.”

The results achieved from aquaculture on the Ya Ly hydroelectric reservoir in Sa Thay district have contributed to the development of Kon Tum province's aquaculture industry. By 2025, the province will have more than 1,000 hectares of aquaculture with a total output of over 8,400 tons. The main aquaculture species are traditional aquatic species such as monosex tilapia, grass carp, carp, snakehead fish and some species with high economic value such as catfish, sturgeon, eel, and snakehead fish./.
