Farmers in Chieng Pan commune spray pesticides on rice plants.

These days, in the fields of Chieng Sang commune, farmers are concentrating on reinforcing the banks to retain water, pruning and replanting rice fields, weeding, leading water into the fields, and fertilizing the rice. Thanks to timely planting and favorable weather, 120 hectares of spring rice in Chieng Sang commune are growing well. The rice is currently in the tillering stage. The commune has sent cadres directly to the grassroots to guide farmers on proper fertilization measures and ways to save water.

Mr. Hoang Van Khu, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Sang Commune, said: To ensure enough irrigation water for the spring rice area, the commune has inspected and repaired 2 pumping stations with a capacity of 6,000 m3 /hour and reviewed and cleared nearly 4 km of intra-field canals to provide irrigation water to the fields. At the same time, it has directed cooperatives and enterprises in the area to import fertilizers to supply to farmers; mobilize people to actively visit the fields, monitor the growth of each field, and ensure good rice growth. During these days, the changing weather is favorable for many types of pests to develop and cause damage. Therefore, in addition to taking care of and ensuring reasonable water regulation for rice plants, the commune recommends that people regularly visit the fields, check and monitor the growth of rice plants; when pests are detected, they must be treated, isolated, and effective pesticides must be used to prevent the spread of disease on a large scale.

Irrigation water at irrigation works in Chieng Sang commune is basically sufficient for production.

Taking care of her family's rice field, Ms. Hoang Thi Lan, Dan 2 village, Chieng Sang commune, shared: Her family has 2,000 m2 of Dai Thom 8 rice variety. When the rice plants have taken root and turned green 15 days after transplanting, the family urgently fertilizes and agitates the mud to help the rice fields become airy, avoid root binding, and dissolve fertilizers and bury them deep in the soil, absorbing nutrients better, stimulating the rice to produce many strong, concentrated tillers.

In Chieng Dong commune, this spring crop, the whole commune planted 125 hectares of rice, of which 80% of the area was hybrid rice, the remaining 20% was pure rice. Right from the end of the winter crop, the commune focused on directing the good implementation of irrigation work in the fields. In addition to fertilizing the rice, farmers regularly check and visit the fields to detect early pests and diseases in the fields so that timely measures can be taken to prevent them.

Farmers in Chieng Pan commune fertilize rice plants.

Mr. Lo Van Sum, Nam Un village, Chieng Dong commune, informed: Part of the rice field area is sunken, the soil is acidic, so moss appears after transplanting. With the guidance of the commune officials, we have added lime powder to neutralize the acidity, limiting root suffocation disease in rice. Every 3 days, the family pumps water into the field once, with enough water, the rice area grows well. The family is focusing on weeding and fertilizing the second time.

This spring crop, Yen Chau district planted nearly 900 hectares of rice, of which the structure of high-quality rice varieties and the ability to resist pests and diseases accounted for more than 80% of the area, mainly the following varieties: Nep 86, 87, Dai Thom 8, Du Huong 8, TBR 97... Striving to achieve a spring rice yield of over 65.8 quintals/ha, the district is focusing on directing specialized agencies to guide people to sow and plant in a concentrated manner; actively care for and prevent pests and diseases; pay attention to regulating irrigation water reasonably, not letting any area suffer from drought or water shortage.

In areas with slow growth, farmers are directed to focus on fertilizing with nitrogen and organic fertilizers so that rice can grow and develop well, ensuring productivity according to plan. With guidance from specialized agencies on how to care for and prevent pests and diseases for rice, farmers in the area have proactively and effectively applied them. Currently, all rice areas are growing well, and no pests have appeared.

Staff of Yen Chau District Agricultural Service Center guide people on pest control in rice.

Mr. Pham Van Thanh, Director of Yen Chau District Agricultural Service Center, said: After completing the planting, the Center sent staff to communes and towns to guide farmers in taking care of spring rice, pruning and replanting rice areas with missing stems and clumps to ensure density; recommending farmers to apply specialized fertilizers for each rice variety to supplement balanced and necessary nutrients suitable for the stage, helping the rice plants to be strong and resistant. Coordinated with the Yen Chau Branch Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited to propagate to communes a reasonable water regulation plan, not to waste, ensuring irrigation water for farmers to produce. Spring crops often have yellow leaf root suffocation, rice blast, and golden apple snail damage. The unit regularly propagates farmers to regularly monitor and closely follow the fields to detect early outbreaks of pests and diseases, thereby taking timely preventive measures.

Proactively implementing synchronous measures to prevent pests and diseases and combat drought, up to now, the spring rice area in Yen Chau district has grown and developed well. This is a positive signal for farmers to believe that this year's spring crop will be effective.
