Coming to Regiment 28 in these historic April days, we feel the exciting atmosphere and determination to compete to achieve achievements to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 / April 30, 2025). According to Senior Lieutenant Colonel Luong Tri Thanh, Party Secretary and Political Commissar of Regiment 28, officers and soldiers of Regiment 28 are always proud of the unit's tradition of steadfast and indomitable fighting.

In particular, during the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign, the 28th Regiment was assigned by the 10th Division, 3rd Corps to penetrate deeply into the campaign, using a strong, highly mobile combined arms force to capture Tan Son Nhat Airport, then develop with friendly units to capture the puppet General Staff.

The task was very heavy and difficult, but with the determination and spirit of "one day is equal to 20 years", from April 26 to 28, 1975, the Regiment Party Committee conference and the military-political conference thoroughly grasped the motto and guiding ideology of the operation "Bold, sure to win, strike hard, grasp the opportunity, penetrate deeply, develop quickly, strike dangerously, strike accurately, finish quickly". The attack formation was organized into two strong mobile blocks of combined arms and reserve forces and firepower. At exactly 6:30 a.m. on April 29, 1975, Regiment 28 was ordered to launch to carry out the mission.

After more than 26 hours, at exactly 11:30, the historical moment was forever imprinted in the memory of every officer and soldier of the Regiment - the victory flag of the Regiment was planted by the heroic soldiers of Company 10 on the top floor of the puppet General Staff building. After that, the troops spread out to occupy the buildings and targets, collecting the command baton, passport, "lieutenant general" rank and "presidential" seal of Nguyen Van Thieu, the command sword of Cao Van Vien, and all the important documents of the enemy's military command apparatus.

“After the campaign, Regiment 28 was awarded the Second Class Military Exploit Order. The Regiment contributed to the “exceptionally excellent” achievements of Division 10 and Corps 3 in the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign, contributing to the successful conclusion of our people’s resistance war against the US to save the country. Just over 6 months later, on January 15, 1976, the Regiment was honored by the Party and State with the title of Hero of the People’s Armed Forces. In the Regiment, Battalion 1, Battalion 3 and Company 10 were also awarded this noble title,” said Lieutenant Colonel Luong Tri Thanh.

While leading us on a tour of the unit, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Trong Thang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Commander of Regiment 28, shared that in recent years, Regiment 28 has had many policies, solutions, models, and good practices to improve the overall quality and combat strength of the unit. From 2020 to 2025, the Regiment has invested nearly 3.8 billion VND in training. The unit has had 153 initiatives and improvements serving the task of training and political education recognized.

The results of the annual inspection of the contents are 99.92% or higher meeting the requirements, of which more than 82% are good and excellent; 2 new soldier training companies achieved "3 explosions" good. Deploying many good and effective models and methods in building a clean and strong Party organization and a comprehensively strong unit that is "exemplary and exemplary", such as: "4 good Party cells"; "Two friends progressing together"; "One on one"; "Practical study hours"; "Youth branches with no members violating discipline"; "One good news every day, one beautiful story every week"; linking the implementation of the Emulation Movement to Win with studying and following the ideology, morality and style of Ho Chi Minh and the Campaign to Promote Tradition, Contribute Talent, Worthy of Uncle Ho's Soldiers in the new period, creating a synchronous and solid change in all aspects of work.

Working closely with the ethnic people of Kon Tum province, Regiment 28 has performed well the function of a "working army", carrying out mass mobilization work in many new, diverse and creative forms and models, contributing to building a strong grassroots political system, fighting to eliminate the Ha Mon cult, backward customs, maintaining political security, order and social safety in the area. Mobilizing many resources to help people build new rural areas, reduce poverty sustainably, and eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses. Over the past 5 years, 100% of the Regiment's agencies and units have met the standards of "Good mass mobilization units"; helping people repair 46.5km of inter-village roads; dredging 16.7km of intra-field canals; presenting more than 2,520 sets of clothes and hundreds of gifts to people.

Through the stories of the leaders of Regiment 28 and seeing with our own eyes the spacious, well-organized unit, the tanned faces, shining with pride and the exciting training atmosphere on the training ground, listening to the loud commands of the new soldiers, we know that the generations of officers and soldiers of Regiment 28 today are continuing to write the glorious history of the unit, planting the flag on the roof of the puppet General Staff, establishing many new achievements and feats.
