The garden of Mr. Phan Van Mau's house in Rach Chuoi, Hamlet 2, Nguyen Phich Commune, about 70 years ago was the place where the late General Secretary Le Duan lived and carried out revolutionary activities. In this place, in 1955-1958, the late General Secretary Le Duan drafted the "Outline of the Southern Revolution". During this time, the late General Secretary Le Duan was raised and safely protected by Mr. Phan Van Mau's family.
Originally a revolutionary base, Nguyen Phich land was severely devastated, especially during the resistance war against the US. Since 1959, the US and the Saigon army set up posts everywhere, sweeping day and night with the "U Minh Grass Removal" campaign. Mr. Huynh Trung Ngon, a veteran member of Hamlet 2, Nguyen Phich commune, who used to be a local guerrilla, recalled: "The US and the Saigon army attacked very fiercely, many times with fierce sweeps. Despite that, the local army and people still held on and participated in fighting the sweeps to liberate their homeland. Most of the young people joined the guerrilla armed forces to fight the sweeps, and the people protected and sheltered the soldiers until the day of liberation."
After the liberation day, people in Rach Chuoi, Hamlet 2 in particular and in Nguyen Phich commune in general continued to promote the spirit of solidarity, focused on developing the family economy, actively contributed to the work of hunger eradication and poverty reduction, joined hands to build the homeland and build new rural areas. Thanks to that, people's lives have been constantly improved.
People in Hamlet 2, Nguyen Phich Commune actively develop family economy and join hands with the locality to build new rural areas.
Mr. Pham Van Hien, Secretary of the Party Committee of Nguyen Phich Commune, excitedly said: “In recent years, the Party Committee, the government and local departments, branches and organizations have mobilized all resources to build their homeland. The commune has effectively implemented capital sources from national target programs, such as sustainable poverty reduction, new rural construction... to invest in infrastructure construction, deploy production models for people to implement. At the same time, the commune proactively and flexibly implemented policies on forest economic development, so the lives of people in the commune are increasingly improving, the face of the countryside is constantly changing. Currently, the average income per capita of the commune has reached more than 51 million VND".
Nguyen Phich used to be known as the "poor pocket" of U Minh district. Currently, the commune has only 263 poor households, accounting for 5.42% and 64 near-poor households, accounting for 1.31%. Compared to the beginning of 2024, the number of poor households has decreased by 151, a decrease of 3.11%. The commune has currently achieved 12/19 new rural criteria. Along with the implementation of new rural construction and poverty reduction, in recent years, the commune has mobilized all resources to support hundreds of houses for poor and disadvantaged households, to help people improve their lives.
The policy of allocating forest land to people for management has created favorable conditions for reviving the forest economy, making the lives of people under the forest canopy constantly develop.
Mr. Pham Van Hien added: “Currently, the locality is actively implementing the program of eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses and building social housing in the area, striving to complete a total of 211 houses for policy families, poor and near-poor households and ethnic minority households by the end of June. At the same time, the commune mobilizes socialized resources to provide additional support for poor and near-poor households so that they have the conditions to improve their lives, contributing positively to poverty reduction and new rural construction in the locality.”
Although the commune has not yet met the new rural standards, the people of Nguyen Phich are very proud because the once poor land has now put on a new coat. The vast forests, associated with the traditional beekeeping profession - a national intangible cultural heritage. Besides, this is also a land with great potential for forestry development, rich in agriculture and aquaculture. New, spacious houses are springing up every day to replace the old ones, which is the clearest evidence of the change of the heroic homeland./.
