The Party has led our people to fight heroically against colonialism and imperialism; resolutely and cleverly used revolutionary violence to fight against counter-revolutionary violence; achieved the goal of national independence, national unification, and leading the whole country to socialism. Our Party has correctly and creatively resolved the relationship between revolution and revolutionary war; successfully resolved many fundamental issues regarding revolutionary guidelines, building revolutionary forces and revolutionary methods, methods of conducting war, and military art. Our Party has promoted the tradition of patriotism and national pride, built, consolidated, and developed the unity of the entire community of Vietnamese ethnic groups.

This April, 50 years ago, Saigon city - "Pearl of the Far East" seemed to shine brightly. At 11:30 on April 30, 1975, the revolutionary flag followed the rapid footsteps to Saigon, carrying the dust and wind, fluttering on the roof of the Independence Palace, signaling our complete victory. From here, the country was completely independent and free, the country was united. From here, Saigon was named Ho Chi Minh City, entering a new stage, together with the whole country entering the period of building our country "more dignified, more beautiful".

The great victory in the spring of 1975 was a glorious feat of arms in the cause of fighting against the US and saving the country. Assessing this great historical event, the 4th Congress (December 1976) of our Party affirmed: “The victory of the resistance war against the US and saving the country is the result of a series of factors that created the invincible strength of the Vietnamese revolution. The origin of all those factors is the correct leadership of our Party”. The great lesson of this great feat is that to win, we must win step by step; we must use creative and correct revolutionary methods, with the art of sharp and flexible strategic command of attack and uprising.

The Art of War in Vietnam was written by an American scholar after the historical events of the Spring of 1975, with the general idea that the greatest discovery of the Americans about Vietnam through the war was a cultural discovery. Historian George C. Herring said more specifically: “This war cannot be won in any sense at a moral or material cost that the Americans consider acceptable.”

As time goes by, we increasingly realize the profound significance of this historical and epochal feat. This feat not only liberated the South and unified the country, but also demonstrated the burning aspiration of the Vietnamese people: Independence - freedom - unity. It is a flower platform formed by the dedication, sacrifices, and blood of many generations of fallen people, a testament to the truth that "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom". This feat affirms the mettle and intelligence of Vietnam in defeating one of the most powerful military powers in the world. That convincingly proves that, with a strong will, a spirit of solidarity and the right strategy, no force can subdue us. The great victory of April 30 strongly encouraged the national liberation movement in the world, promoting peace and international cooperation.

History turns a new page. A new page of history requires new thinking and creativity. Poet To Huu with great contemplation wrote: “We will be a hundred times stronger/ Standing guard over the fresh blue sea and sky” (Total victory is ours). After the war, the country was severely devastated, especially the infrastructure and production. In the South, the centralized, bureaucratic and subsidized economy caused great turmoil. Inflation, food shortages, scarce goods, people's lives were miserable in many ways. In addition, the embargo policy from the US and the West further exhausted the economy.

Despite the hardships, with the spirit of self-reliance, we have gradually overcome difficulties and carried out the restoration and reconstruction of the country. What will come will come as a historical inevitability. The 6th Party Congress (1986) initiated a comprehensive, profound and thorough renovation process. From a subsidized economic model, Vietnam shifted to a socialist-oriented market economy, creating conditions for production and business development.

The achievements of the renovation process after four decades have created a solid position and strength for our country to take off. In the late 70s and early 80s of the 20th century, the socio-economic crisis was severe, the inflation rate sometimes reached more than 770%, there was a persistent food shortage, many specific policies of the Party at that time discussed the issue of how to "solve food" for society. That "fairy tale" is still heartbreaking every time it is mentioned. Along with affirming the achievements, our Party has clearly recognized the severe socio-economic situation: Production increased slowly, production efficiency and investment were low, distribution and circulation were chaotic, and large imbalances in the economy were slow to narrow. As a tropical agricultural country with two large rice granaries, the Mekong Delta and the Red River Delta, there is still a year-round shortage of food.

Then there was no “miracle”, time and effort, courage and intelligence turned the land into gold. Without the difficulties and challenges of the 1980s, there would not have been the renovation, there would not have been the Vietnam of today. Over the past decades, our country has ensured food security, becoming an exporter of rice and many other agricultural products. Despite many instabilities of the global economy, Vietnam has maintained a stable and strong growth momentum and quickly become one of the most dynamic economies in Southeast Asia. The scale of GDP has been constantly expanding. Our country has left the group of low-income countries since 2008. Industry has developed quite rapidly, the proportion of industry and services has continuously increased, currently accounting for about 85% of GDP.

In the national picture, after half a century, Ho Chi Minh City is proud to have developed rapidly, promoting its role as an economic locomotive. For many years, the City has maintained an impressive "constant": Creating about 1/4 of the gross domestic product, 1/3 of the value of industrial output, 27% of the total budget revenue. In 2024, the total budget revenue of the whole country exceeded the threshold of more than 2 million billion VND for the first time, of which Ho Chi Minh City alone reached 502 thousand billion VND.

If you want to go far, go with friends. In recent years, Vietnam's foreign affairs and international integration activities have continued to expand and achieved many important results. Our country's potential, position and prestige in the international arena have been increasingly enhanced. The results achieved are even more meaningful in the context of the world's political and economic situation undergoing many rapid, complex and unpredictable developments. By implementing an independent and autonomous foreign policy, Vietnam has taken smart and flexible steps to "break the ice", increase political trust, and integrate regionally and internationally. Vietnamese culture permeates and permeates Vietnam's diplomacy.

It is the friendly and benevolent nature, the peaceful and tolerant nature, the delicate, flexible and supple behavior but steadfast in the principle of "the unchanging, adapting to all changes", all for the benefit of the nation. Up to now, our country has established official diplomatic relations with 194 countries and territories in the world, has a comprehensive strategic partnership with 12 countries, of which Indonesia and Singapore are two of the 5 founding countries of ASEAN, having just upgraded the comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam in March 2025.

Half a century of peace and unity, we know that there are still many difficulties and challenges, but we have met all the conditions to enter a new era, building our country "more dignified, more beautiful". On the national festival day, we are more aware of the happiness of the people living in peace, harmony and national reconciliation. What does each Vietnamese think and do at this historic moment? The draft documents of the 14th National Party Congress set out major orientations and specific tasks: "Strive to realize the aspiration for national development in the era of national development".

The vision is broad, the road is wide, no matter how steep the pass is, the will is still steadfast, the heart is still steadfast. Under the glorious flag of the Party, the great national unity, the development of science, technology, innovation and digital transformation are the decisive factors in the acceleration of countries. As General Secretary To Lam said, this is the "golden key" to help the country overcome the middle-income trap, avoid the risk of falling behind and catch up with the times.
