200-year-old ancient mountain village once welcomed thousands of visitors, now 'empty gardens and empty houses'

Thien Huong ancient village is home to 37 Tay ethnic households of the Dong Van stone plateau, Ha Giang province. Over 200 years, the simple, rustic ancient houses have become an attractive tourist destination for domestic and foreign visitors.

Tourists come here to experience the ancient space associated with the culture of the Tay people. Here, tourists can freely capture "unique" images when coming to Ha Giang.

The houses in Thien Huong ancient village are built in the ancient architectural style with yin-yang tiled roofs and earthen walls. The house is divided into two rooms, the lower room for cooking and living, and the upper room for storing furniture.

However, after natural disasters this year, the geology of Thien Huong ancient village has been fractured, causing landslides to occur continuously. Especially after the recent storm No. 3, the cracks have spread and eaten into each house of the people.

The subsidence has cracked the walls and the risk of houses collapsing is always present.

Faced with this situation, the local government has blocked off and prohibited people from entering or leaving the ancient village. The warm village with peaceful roofs is now in a state of “empty gardens and empty houses”.

The disappearance of the village with its ancient houses is only a matter of time. Many people regret having to leave their place of residence, many tourists miss the opportunity to experience the attractive tourist destination in Ha Giang.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang, Vice Chairman of Dong Van Town People's Committee, told VietNamNet that the government and people both regret the loss of the ancient village. However, to ensure the safety of people's lives, the district had to evacuate people and property to a safe place.

According to Mr. Thang, in recent years this place has been a popular tourist destination thanks to its wild and rustic nature.

“Currently, the People's Committee of Dong Van district has developed a plan and submitted it to the People's Committee of Ha Giang province to build a new resettlement area for 37 households. The new residence is expected to be about 400m from the old village and will be built with similar architectural features to the old village,” said Mr. Thang.
