Musician Tan Huyen's real name is Phan Van Tan. He was a literature teacher in the Tu area - a free zone during the French resistance. He belonged to a generation of musicians who emerged during the French resistance and made many contributions to peace, especially during the period of fighting against the Americans to save the country.
Musician Tan Huyen was born on April 5, 1931 in Duc Tho - Nghe Tinh. Like many musicians of his generation, Tan Huyen participated in the resistance war, did cultural propaganda work in Nghe An, and composed songs; then did research work at the Music and Dance Department and then returned to the Vietnam Musicians Association.
Tan Huyen's composing ability was revealed early. At that time, all students in his hometown knew the song "Moon Season Returns" (1948), which was dreamy, romantic, but innocent and lovely. By 1950, Tan Huyen had a song that was truly known to many people and widely popularized. That song was "Remembering My Hometown". The song has a graceful and free melody, describing a very poetic and affectionate countryside. "Remembering My Hometown" was one of the best songs written about the homeland in the treasure trove of Vietnamese songs during the resistance war against the French.
After peace was restored, Tan Huyen attended many composition training courses to enter the professional composing profession. Many songs later, with the folk music of his hometown Nghe An, won the hearts of listeners, such as: "Tieng ho tren dat Nghe An" (1965); "Mot minh voi song La"; "Nostalgia for Nam Dan". Many songs by musician Tan Huyen were filled with love for the homeland, such as: "Each step, I love my Fatherland more" (1965); "Duong di len loi mo" (1968); "Ha Noi on the height of victory" (1972); "Xe ta di trong dem Truong Son" (1972); "Em dang trung luong hom nay" (1976); "Tro lai Cao Bang" (1983)...
It can be said that Tan Huyen is a proactive musician, willing to travel and write. He is present at the spearheads of life from the border to the islands, from the highlands to the plains... Wherever he goes, he leaves behind compositions that leave a strong mark on each region and each field...
Regarding the topic of education, musician Tan Huyen has "Em dang trung hoc thang nay". About this song, the musician recounted that, during an opening ceremony at the Pedagogical University, he met a very pretty freshman from the countryside, with eyes as clear as the autumn sky that moved him. "Em dang trung hoc thang nay" was born like that, a song about the teaching profession, specifically a female pedagogical student: "Em dang trung hoc thang nay/But joy is overflowing in my heart/From a girl from the suburbs/For months and years I have always dreamed/To fly with you to the vast horizons of science...". It was a coincidence but also a fate that the first and best singer to perform the song was Quynh Lien - a teacher at the Pedagogical University. She sang like her heart, her profession and her love.
The song "Em dang giua giang duong hom nay" by musician Tan Huyen was chosen for listeners to comment on in the column "You love music, comment on music" of the music program according to YCTG in November 2002.
And one of the comments sent to the program was by Pham Hong Thinh, class A, K42, University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi. He wrote: “I will say goodbye to the university lecture hall soon. The future path is wide open waiting. At this moment, the song “Em dang giua giang duong hom nay” by musician Tan Huyen rang out. Listening to the song, I felt like I was listening to the voice of my soul.”
Pham Hong Thinh continued: “The soaring melody and clear, rhythmic lyrics, like the soul of the character in the song, have led the listener into a world of joy, faith and dreams. You - the teacher "standing in the middle of the lecture hall today with joy in your heart" look back at the past, look at the present and look to the future. Your past is yesterday when you were a young student studying hard with the noble dream of "flying with your sister and me to the horizons of science". Your present is now, when you "have risen to become a teacher in the new era". That is the joy, the happiness that not everyone has. Your future is tomorrow, when you will be like a bird flying into a new horizon, the horizon of the aspirations of youth that are constantly reaching out. Time passes, one generation follows another, you are a teacher again and your students begin with the joy of "standing in the middle of the lecture hall" like you today...".
Musician Tan Huyen's contributions have been recognized by awards from the Central and local Literature and Arts Associations, sectors and organizations: State Prize for Literature and Arts, 6 awards from the Vietnam Musicians Association, 1 first prize from the Ministry of National Defense, 4 Ha Long awards, 3 Hoa Phuong Do awards, 3 Hanoi awards. He was awarded the Second Class Labor Medal, the First Class Resistance Medal against America for National Salvation.
