Love the homeland through every musical note

Not pursuing a professional artistic career, nor receiving any specialized training, Ms. Truong Hang Nga (born in 1974), a teacher at Hai Khe Primary and Secondary School, Hai Lang District, is still known by many people for dozens of sweet and profound songs. Choosing to stick with the teaching profession, after class hours, Ms. Nga is also passionate about composing and sending her love for her homeland, country, and people into each song. Love the homeland through every musical note

Ms. Nga is from Gio Viet commune, Gio Linh district. Although she is an English teacher, she has a special passion and affinity for music. “When I was young, I loved listening to music and knew many songs by heart. Every time I watched music and listened to cải lương performed by art troupes in my hometown, I wished I could stand on stage.

However, because of my shy nature, I did not dare to think about pursuing a career related to music. Later, when I was over 30, my love for art arose. From poems I composed, I sang them into melodies, then practiced putting them to music and became passionate about them ever since...", Ms. Nga said.

In 2018, Nga "got acquainted" with writing music after connecting and interacting with some musicians through social networks and being encouraged by them to boldly try if they liked it. Having taught herself how to write poetry and draw and doing both quite well, after a few weeks of experimenting, Nga was able to write her first song. Once she had the lyrics and melody, she began sending her ideas by recording them to her musician friends for their feedback.

What is admirable is that Ms. Nga does all the steps such as building the song structure, copying the music, and playing notes to determine the rhythm on the guitar by hand without any software or modern tools. When it comes to developing the melody with chords and arranging the harmony, Ms. Nga relies on the support and adjustment of a friend.

After much effort, in August 2018, her first song “Quang Tri mot tinh yeu” was born in her joy. Happily, after only a short time of “release”, the song with simple lyrics and profound lyrics about the homeland was widely welcomed by people inside and outside the province with thousands of views and shares on various platforms.

Since then, whenever she feels emotional, Ms. Nga writes music. From the sadness and joy in life to emotions about the teaching profession, the theme of love between couples and especially the feelings for the homeland, she borrows lyrics to express them all.

“Being involved in the career of educating people, I have had the opportunity to work in many rural areas of Quang Tri. Every land I have been through has left an impression of warm human affection, natural scenery, and unique cultural features, and I always want to record those things through music. Through music, I also express my feelings for the lands that have “become my soul,” Nga confided.

In the early stages of composing, many musicians enthusiastically helped, gave professional advice, and approved her ideas to complete her work, such as musicians Luc Hoa, Trong Lap, Do Tien Lap... Loving and admiring Nga's efforts to pursue her passion, most of her image makers or singers and beat makers such as Meritorious Artist Xuan Huyen, Phan Toan, Hoang Tinh, Ho Duc Hung, Hai Au, Bang Chau... and friends such as Quoc Nam, Dieu Vinh Linh, Vu Trong Phuong, Nha Ka... all created all conditions and enthusiastically supported her every time she released a new song.

Up to now, she has composed over 50 songs and nearly 10 co-composed songs. Some impressive songs include: Cam Lo ngay ve, Hai Lang mien dau yeu, Hai Duong que minh, Ben bo cua yeu thuong, Ky niem bat vong, Dong Ha vao xuan... In which, the most prominent is Cam Lo ngay ve, a song that Nga co-composed (lyrics) with musician Trong Lap (music) and won third prize in the Campaign to compose songs about the homeland Cam Lo in 2020.

In addition, Ms. Nga's compositions about the land and people of Hai Lang - where she is working - have also received positive feedback from the audience. Many of her songs have been chosen to perform at major programs and celebrations in Hai Khe and Hai Duong communes...

“I often pay attention to learning about the history of places and the unique features of each land to select suitable lyrics and melodies. For example, when writing about Hai Lang, I choose a melody that is both heroic to highlight the traditions of the revolutionary homeland but also profound when talking about the humanity and cultural identity of this place,” she shared.

Talking to Ms. Nga, we felt the simplicity, gentleness and rusticity in her personality, just like her lyrics. Her songs are lyrical and profound, evoking simple yet familiar images. The theme of homeland in her songs often emphasizes the attachment between people and their homeland, like an invitation for each person to return to their roots, to a peaceful place.

Ms. Nga said that in the coming time, in parallel with continuing to compose in the spirit of satisfying her passion, bringing spiritual food to convey positive messages to everyone, she will choose a number of songs to register copyright; build an increasingly perfect personal image; further develop in terms of communication so that the products reach more people.

“For me, music is not only a passion but also a special bridge that helps me understand life better, practice many skills, be more confident in life and make many friends. I will always nurture this passion even though life is full of hardships and worries...”, Ms. Nga said.
