In the fields of our province today, the structure of varieties is being promoted to reduce the proportion of hybrid rice and expand the area of ​​quality rice. In Van Xa commune (Kim Bang town), the conversion of rice variety structure towards quality goods is being carried out quickly. Currently, quality rice in the spring crop in Van Xa accounts for over 90%, only areas that are too low are planted with hybrid rice. Most of this area is planted with sticky rice, the rest is planted with some other quality varieties, such as: Bac Thom No. 7, ST 25... Commercial rice in the commune is also planned for compact production to ensure the same variety, the same tea, convenient for the care process, and pest control. Mr. Duong Duc Hung, Director of Van Xa Agricultural Service Cooperative (HTXDVNN) said: Local quality rice production develops according to market demand. All sticky rice products when harvested are sold by people to the local dealer system. This production direction is about 20-25% more efficient than the previous fragmented production of many varieties.

In many other localities in the province, the proportion of quality rice in spring crop production has also increased significantly over the years. In the spring crop of 2025, quality rice accounts for 53% of the area, an increase of 2.5% compared to the previous spring crop, becoming the main production direction in the fields of the province. Many localities have a high proportion of high-quality rice, such as: Duy Tien town 57.8%, Kim Bang town 57.7%, Binh Luc district 55%... In Thanh Liem district, hybrid rice used to play a key role (more than 60% of the area), but now, quality rice has been planted and grown at a rate of more than 53%. In the district, many fields have been formed to produce quality rice with the same variety, same tea, same care process, applying tray seeding method, machine planting... According to Ms. Do Thi Thanh Nga, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thanh Liem district, the locality is promoting the conversion of rice variety structure towards quality goods in the spring crop. Field infrastructure, especially irrigation works, have been invested in and built, contributing to eliminating waterlogging and depressions, creating favorable conditions for rearranging production in a concentrated direction. Rice products from the district's cultivated areas are gradually becoming commodities, bringing high profits to farmers.

In localities, the conversion of rice varieties towards quality commodities in the spring crop has helped promote production efficiency. The main advantage now is that there are many quality rice varieties with the ability to yield high yields (over 60 quintals/ha/crop), equivalent to hybrid rice for localities to choose according to production conditions. The price of quality rice varieties is only 50-70% compared to hybrid rice (ranging from 30-50 thousand VND/kg). Moreover, quality rice is a purebred rice variety that is suitable and well adapted to local soil, does not require intensive cultivation (uses less fertilizer than hybrid rice); pests and diseases are limited... In particular, current market demand is more oriented towards quality products, increasing selling prices. On average, the price of high-quality rice is 1.2-1.5 times higher than hybrid rice or other purebred rice varieties. Rice processing enterprises purchase more quality rice products than other types of rice... Discussing the transformation of spring rice varieties, Mr. Truong Quoc Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, assessed: The proportion of quality rice in the province's variety structure is being expanded, playing a key role in the crop season. This is an inevitable development need, in line with the province's orientation, creating products with high commodity value. This direction is being oriented by the industry to continue to maintain and expand in the coming time.

However, the production of quality rice in general and in the spring crop in particular is still facing difficulties and limitations. That is, production in some localities is still fragmented, and concentrated areas have not been formed to create commodity products. Quality rice production has not yet organized many organic models, Viet GAP to participate in high-value supply chains (export, bringing to supermarkets, stores selling safe agricultural products). Currently, in the province, there are only a few areas that have formed a chain linking production and consumption of products...

The province's rice production area is still maintained at more than 26,000 hectares per crop. The whole province has built more than 70 model fields, some of which are concentrated land models. It is thought that in the coming time, localities need to focus on building concentrated quality rice production models, applying safe, organic, VietGAP production methods... At the same time, promote the organization of production under contracts with enterprises to further increase production value and profits on cultivated areas.
