Increase income from beekeeping for honey

Ha Nam is a locality blessed with mountains and forests. Taking advantage of natural advantages, in recent times, the beekeeping profession of local people has developed quite strongly, not only helping to increase income but also contributing to protecting the natural environment.

Mr. Tran Cong Vinh's family in Phu Phuc commune (Ly Nhan) raises 60 honey bee colonies. With the advantage of a locality with many crops such as longan, lychee, etc., he has invested in beekeeping for honey for many years. Mr. Vinh said: This year, the weather is favorable, fruit trees, especially longan trees, are very productive, so the amount of honey collected is expected to be higher than last year. Each type of flower gives a different characteristic honey flavor, but honey from longan and lychee flowers is of better quality, is favored by the market and has more economic value than other types of nectar. Currently, the market price of honey ranges from 170,000 to 200,000 VND/liter. At the beginning of this year's crop, I moved the bee colonies to collect lychee nectar in some neighboring communes, places rich in flower sources, to make the most of the honey collected right from the beginning of the crop.

According to Mr. Chu Dinh Tu, a longan grower for many years in Moc Hoan commune (Duy Tien), this year's longan flower season is good, the favorable weather creates conditions for beekeepers to collect honey. If the weather is sunny, the honey yield will certainly be high. Normally, about 5 - 7 days can "collect honey" once, a longan flower harvest can rotate 5 - 6 times of beekeeping.

Harvesting honey at Mr. Vu Van Hai's household, Do Le village, Lien Son commune (Kim Bang town).

Mr. Vu Van Hai's family in Do Le village, Lien Son (Kim Bang town) is currently raising more than 50 bee colonies. Taking advantage of the semi-mountainous land and family garden, his beekeeping model always maintains a stable number of colonies and provides a relatively good income. Mr. Hai shared: Raising bees is not as hard as raising other animals, but in return requires diligence and hard work. Bees are very sensitive to environmental conditions, weather, especially dust and chemicals. I have been raising bees for about 20 years. At first, due to lack of experience, I encountered many difficulties. Because bees live in large populations, fly to many places to find pollen, they are susceptible to disease and spread disease quickly. Therefore, I am always aware of collecting and cleaning up waste around the farming area as well as using pesticides in the agricultural production process. In my opinion, to optimize productivity and turn bee products into commodities, beekeepers need to master the biological characteristics and habits of bee colonies... and apply biosafety farming processes and disease prevention. Initially, I only used the garden to raise bees for honey for my family. Later, seeing the effectiveness, I invested in expanding and multiplying the colony with the purpose of collecting honey for sale. There was a time when I raised more than 100 bee colonies, and could harvest 100 liters a day. Beekeeping has brought a steady annual income to my family with an average value of 50 - 70 million VND/year depending on each flower season.

Previously, beekeeping and honey harvesting activities in Lien Son commune were mainly maintained on a small scale, spontaneously among the people, so in the early stages of developing the profession, the economic efficiency was not high. Since the establishment of the Lien Son Commune Honey Beekeeping Cooperative, it has contributed to transforming the local economic development model, promoting the development of beekeeping and creating conditions for members to share experiences in the process of caring for and developing bee colonies. In particular, the honey products of the Lien Son Commune Honey Beekeeping Cooperative have achieved 3-star OCOP certification. Mr. Nguyen Van Nhu, Do Le village said: Joining the Cooperative, I was able to share experiences in beekeeping, how to prevent diseases for bees; and was connected and facilitated to buy quality bee breeds. Thanks to that, my family has now developed and raised 40 bee colonies, with a relatively stable annual income.

In addition to economic values, beekeeping also brings about ecological benefits. With the support of the authorities and the efforts of the community, beekeeping in the province will develop steadily, contributing to improving people's lives.
