People of Hat Lot commune, Mai Son district check for pests on crops.

The complicated weather conditions are favorable for pests to arise and cause harm to many crops. Specialized agencies are stepping up investigation, forecasting, disseminating information, and guiding farmers on measures to prevent and protect crops.

According to the investigation and survey results of the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, about 80 hectares of spring rice in some localities have appeared white-backed planthoppers, brown planthoppers, with a common damage density of 200 individuals/m² and some other harmful pests, such as: Golden apple snails, rice stem borers, root suffocation...

In addition, over 70 hectares of coffee in Thuan Chau, Mai Son, Sop Cop and City districts have been infected with brown scale insects, green scale insects, anthracnose, stem borers... with a common density of 0.5 insects/m²; nearly 10 hectares of tea in Thuan Chau, Moc Chau, Van Ho are entering the harvesting stage and are slightly infected with tea leafhoppers, green leafhoppers, red spiders, thrips; over 80 hectares of fruit trees are infected with aphids, anthracnose, thrips, stem borers, powdery mildew, scale insects, mealybugs, stunted tops, anthracnose...

Mr. Ho Trung Kien, Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, said: The Department has directed the Agricultural Service Centers of districts, towns and cities to guide farmers on how to prevent and control plant pests. The unit has built farming models and disseminated integrated pest management techniques, and provided instructions on the use of plant protection drugs according to the "4 rights" principle (right drug, right time, right dosage, right method); planting and caring techniques for plants, reducing costs and improving production efficiency. When pests reach the threshold for prevention, farmers are encouraged to prioritize the use of biological and microbiological drugs and comply with quarantine periods to ensure safety.

Officers of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center guide farmers to identify pests and diseases on rice plants.

In Mai Son district, through investigation, it was discovered that nearly 50 hectares of fruit trees, such as mango, longan, grapefruit, have appeared some pests such as anthracnose, brown stink bugs, powdery mildew, stem borers, with an average density of 0.2-0.5%. Ms. Le Thi Thuy Linh, Deputy Director of the Mai Son District Agricultural Service Center, said: The Center has sent technicians to regularly check, monitor and accurately forecast the time of occurrence, scale, and level of each harmful organism. Farmers are advised to collect and destroy diseased parts to avoid spreading. Prune branches and create canopy to create ventilation in the garden, reduce humidity in the garden. At the same time, use pesticides and disease prevention drugs on the permitted list so as not to affect the quality of the fruit.

Along with monitoring and controlling pests, the Department of Agriculture has coordinated to develop pest management (IPM) models in the fields. From 2021 to present, the whole province has deployed 11 IPM application models on fruit trees, citrus trees and cabbage in all districts and cities. At the same time, training courses were organized for nearly 400 farmers.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu, Bon Phang commune, Thuan Chau district, one of the households supported to build an IPM model to cultivate over 2,000 m² of longan trees, said: After 3 years of participating in the IPM model, being supported with fertilizers, pesticides and being trained in garden sanitation techniques, handling early and late flowering, fertilization, pruning, canopy shaping... I see that pests and diseases appear much less, reducing the cost of medicine and care; longan fruits are large and even, bright in color; fruit yield has increased by 20-30% compared to traditional farming methods. This year, I have expanded the IPM model to more than 1 hectare.

The weather forecast will continue to be complicated, with hot weather alternating with showers and high humidity, creating favorable conditions for pests to develop on fruit trees. The Department of Agriculture recommends that farmers focus on supplementing nutrients for better fruit production. Localities need to strengthen inspection and closely monitor the situation of pests and weather developments, promptly instructing farmers to proactively and effectively prevent them.
