Home to more than 8.5 million people, Hanoi has a long history, founded more than 1,000 years ago, the UK's Express.uk wrote in its latest article. The city's official tourism website praises the "vast" Old Quarter and its French colonial buildings, but notes that Hanoi is being renaissanced with "world-class" restaurants and "cool" art galleries. Hanoi also boasts ancient temples, bustling markets, countless pubs and sophisticated rooftop bars. Top tips include sampling street food in the Old Quarter, exploring Hanoi's coffee culture and interacting with locals at Hoan Kiem Lake, considered the heart of the city.
Must-see attractions recommended by Lonely Planet include the Temple of Literature, Dong Xuan Market, Tran Quoc Pagoda, Hoa Lo Prison Museum and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

Other highlights of Hanoi include the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long - a UNESCO world heritage site.
Bach Ma Temple is said to be the oldest temple in Hanoi. It was built by King Ly Thai To in the 11th century to honor a white horse that led him to the place where he decided to build the city walls.
April to June is considered the best time to visit Hanoi, although May is also recommended. September and October tend to be cooler.
Hanoi has Noi Bai International Airport; an extensive bus network throughout the city with cheap fares. There are also ride-hailing apps as well as taxis and motorbikes to help you get around easily.
