The proposal to exempt teachers' children from tuition fees has attracted public attention in recent days. In addition to many conflicting opinions on the proposal, public attention also revolves around the education sector, a field of study that was previously likened to "rats running in the same cage".
But in recent years, especially in the 2024 admissions season, pedagogy is the most attractive major for candidates, not computer engineering, microchip design or artificial intelligence, which are constantly mentioned in the digital age.

In the 2024 admissions season, pedagogy is in the top 4 fields attracting the most candidates along with business and management, engineering and technology, and computer and information technology groups.
Of which, the number of applications for education has increased the most compared to 2023, up to 85%.
The number of applications to pedagogical schools and pedagogical majors from schools further demonstrates the attraction of this major to candidates.
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the number of candidates registering for admission to the school in 2024 is more than 31,000 candidates, an increase of 100% compared to 2023 (more than 15,500 candidates). The number of candidates registering for admission to the school is nearly 52,000, an increase of 120% compared to 2023 (more than 23,300 candidates).
Hanoi Pedagogical University 2 also received a "storm" of applications to enroll in the school during the recent enrollment season.
The school has 1,300 quotas for teacher training majors, but the number of registered wishes is up to 32,900, equivalent to more than 22,500 candidates registering for admission, double that of 2023. In 2023, the total number of registered wishes for the school's pedagogical majors is only 16,700, with over 11,400 candidates.
At Hanoi National University of Education, there are about 40,000 applicants, including both pedagogical and non-pedagogical majors. This year's capacity assessment exam alone attracted more than 11,500 candidates, 2.5 times higher than in 2023.

At Dong Nai University, the number of candidates applying for the school's pedagogical majors increased 1.5 times with more than 5,000 candidates registering. In the preschool education major alone, the number of candidates registering for the exam increased 3 times compared to 2023.
Not only attracting a large number of candidates who want to pursue a teaching career, in recent years, the education industry has also been one of the industries with the top entrance scores. In many schools and education industries, candidates who achieve 9 points per subject still... fail.
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, teacher training majors have benchmark scores in 2024 leading and far surpassing the remaining majors with benchmark scores based on high school graduation scores from 23.9 to 28.6.
The highest scores are for history pedagogy and literature pedagogy with 28.6 points, candidates must achieve an average of over 9.5 points for each subject. Geography pedagogy has a benchmark score of 28.37; chemistry pedagogy 27.67; math pedagogy 27.6…
At Hanoi National University of Education, the benchmark score for 2024 based on high school graduation scores ranges from 22 to 29.3 points. Literature and history pedagogy have the highest benchmark score of 29.3 points, and candidates must achieve an average of nearly 9.8 points per subject to be admitted.
At Can Tho University, pedagogy is also the major with the highest standard score among all professions. History pedagogy has the highest standard score of 28.43 points; geography pedagogy has 27.9 points; literature pedagogy has 27.83 points... far surpassing engineering and information technology professions...
In the 2024 admission season, it was also noted that a series of valedictorians across the country also chose to study pedagogy.
According to the explanation of Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son at the regular Government press conference last August, one of the reasons why the education sector attracts candidates is thanks to the policy of supporting living expenses and tuition fees.
Specifically, with Decree 116/2020 of the Government, pedagogical students are supported by the state to pay tuition fees equal to the tuition fees of the teacher training institution where they study. At the same time, pedagogical students are also supported by the state with 3.63 million VND/month to cover living expenses during their time studying at school.
The leader of a teacher training college predicts that the teacher training industry will continue to attract candidates in the coming years. This attraction comes from many factors such as support for tuition fees, job demand and especially salary policies for teachers.
According to Conclusion 91-KL/TW, the Politburo requires that teachers' salaries be given the highest priority in the administrative career salary scale system and have additional allowances depending on the nature of the job and the region.
Along with the increase in basic salary from July 1, teachers will receive preferential allowances and seniority allowances (working for 5 years or more).

"With this policy, teachers can completely live from their income. These are reasonable and necessary policies to attract good students to pedagogy and to retain teachers. Reality has shown positive signals for the pedagogy industry and education," said this manager.
However, from the perspective of a learner, he believes that candidates should consider when choosing a teaching profession or any other profession, in addition to ability, they should pay attention to their interests, passions and ideals.
If teachers choose to be teachers just because of free tuition or preferential policies in the profession and not because of passion, they may fall into the paradox of "doing a job they don't love", which is both tragic for themselves and leaves consequences for generations of students...
