Nguyen Hoang Minh Quan is currently a student in class 10A2 IT at the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences (under the University of Natural Sciences - Vietnam National University, Hanoi).
In the 10th grade entrance exam in 2024, Minh Quan became the valedictorian with a total score of 48.5, of which Math and English scored 10; Literature scored 9.25.
In addition, Minh Quan's Math score for the IT specialized block in the entrance exam to grade 10 of Hanoi's specialized school was 8.25; his English specialized score was 7.2.
Minh Quan was also admitted to both the IT and English majors of 3 specialized schools, including: the IT major of the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, the IT major of the High School for the Gifted in Hanoi National University of Education, and the English major of the High School for the Gifted in Foreign Languages (under the University of Foreign Languages - Vietnam National University, Hanoi).

Sharing with VietNamNet , Minh Quan said that during this time, candidates need to complete all Math, Literature, and English homework assigned by their teachers.
Along with that, you should find more exam questions from previous years online or in reference books and time yourself before trying them. “Practice questions to know your ability and knowledge. After completing each question, you should look at the answers to know where you went wrong and where you have gaps in knowledge to supplement. Each time you do a question like that, your knowledge will gradually improve. In addition, this also helps us know how to allocate time to do the test appropriately and train our mentality to overcome pressure,” Minh Quan said.
The male student said that when taking extra specialized subjects, it is not necessary to study with too many teachers, just choose a place that feels suitable. Instead, students can spend time "plowing" more on their own.
The valedictorian of 2024 reminded candidates taking the 10th grade exam this year to pay attention to the new question format of the 2018 General Education Program.
When taking the test, in addition to knowledge and solving problems, candidates need to pay attention to presenting ideas clearly and completely to limit losing points.
“Like math, you need to pay attention to details like variable conditions; or when solving an answer, it's not enough, there's also a conclusion,” Minh Quan said.
While doing the test, if you find that you have been thinking about a problem for a long time but still can't figure out how to solve it, you should move on to another problem and come back to it later, if you still have time.
“Getting stuck in solving a problem like that takes too much time and causes psychological stress. Actually, sometimes it’s not that a problem is difficult or easy, but it could be that your mind is stressed at the right time. If you’ve been thinking for a while and feel yourself getting confused, you shouldn’t continue to try to stay in that vicious cycle and should move on to another problem. When you solve another problem, your spirit will improve, and you might even go back to the previous problem and find a solution. If you’re too stressed, you can put down your pen, sit down for a while, and take a sip of water,” Minh Quan shared.
Psychologically, Minh Quan believes that it is necessary to prepare very carefully. Items for the exam such as rulers, compasses, calculators, etc. and personal documents necessary for exam procedures should be prepared the day before, to avoid starting to panic on the exam day, which can easily affect your psychology. "You should also pay attention to your phone, put it in your bag outside the exam area, because it is easy to forget to put it in your pocket and when you enter the exam, a report will be made and you cannot explain it for any reason," Minh Quan shared.
Before the exam day, you also need to proactively set an alarm to wake up.
Another important thing is to arrive at the exam location on time, or even a little early, so that you have time to sit in the exam room with a calm mind. “Being late can easily make you panic, which can greatly affect your test taking and exam results.”
The valedictorian of the 10th grade exam in Hanoi in 2024 also advised this year's candidates not to study too much on the days close to the exam. They should take time to relax and clear their minds. "By the last days, cramming will not help much and will only cause more stress. We should focus on studying and reviewing intensely in the final stages, and only study at a light intensity in the last days before the exam," Minh Quan said.
In addition to studying, to relieve stress, the valedictorian of 2024 still maintains his hobby of swimming regularly until the day of the 10th grade entrance exam.
