Loquat in Duong Lieu commune is a famous specialty every harvest season. The lush green loquat gardens full of bright red ripe fruit are a familiar image and the pride of the people here.
This year, due to the humid and warm weather, the jujube season started earlier, ending in just about half a month. According to Dan Viet reporters, in the largest jujube capital in the North these days, jujubes are ripe and bright red all over the garden, and garden owners are busy harvesting to avoid them falling.
Ms. Phi Thi Luu (a loquat grower in Duong Lieu commune) said: "This year, the loquat yield has decreased sharply due to the loquat crop failure. However, we still have to pick the loquats quickly to catch up with the main loquat season. If we pick them late, the loquats will fall and spoil, losing value."
Although the yield of loquat is affected by erratic weather, the quality of loquat fruit is still guaranteed thanks to the experience of the people in taking care of the plants.
The garden owner chooses evenly red fruits that are neither too hard nor too soft to ensure the quality of the goods for export to traders. Loquat fruits are small and soft, so they must be picked gently and placed skillfully in the box. According to the experience of many loquat growers in Duong Lieu commune, picking this fruit must be "handled like holding an egg, held like holding a flower", so as not to peel or crush the skin.
The gardens of ripe loquats are being meticulously harvested, each fruit picked gently to avoid being crushed.
Loquat season in Duong Lieu is not only a time of economic benefits but also an opportunity for tourists to experience the idyllic rural space and learn about local culture.
The village atmosphere is bustling with the laughter of people, who go out to the garden early in the morning to pick jujubes to bring to the market or deliver to traders.
Ripe loquat fruits are carefully harvested and then carefully classified before being transported for consumption.
Currently, the price of ripe loquats remains quite high. Specifically, the wholesale price fluctuates: grade 1 is 35,000-40,000 VND/kg, grade 2 is 25,000-30,000 VND/kg. However, if transported and sold on the streets of Hanoi, grade 1 loquats are sold by small traders for 100,000-120,000 VND/kg depending on the type. At traditional markets, the price is cheaper at 70,000-90,000 VND/kg.
With suitable climate and soil, Duong Lieu apricot has a characteristic sweet and sour taste, smooth skin, and is very popular in the market. Apricot is not only sold fresh but also processed into traditional products such as dried apricot, pickled apricot, or apricot wine - contributing to increasing the economic value of agricultural products in the region.
