Durian is considered the king of crops with the highest selling price and profit today. This year, farmers in Dak Lak expect to make a big profit as durian has a good harvest and good price.
Another thing to look forward to is that this crop is also widely exported officially to China, a market with more than 1 billion people.
Farmers’ confidence is well-founded as durians cost over VND80,000/kg at the beginning of the harvest season. Many gardeners have even received deposits from traders, setting prices at VND86,000-87,000/kg.
However, when the main season comes, the weather is rainy. The buying and selling of these goods is not as exciting as in previous years.
At this time, the price of durian has started to drop to around 70,000 VND/kg. In addition to the decrease in price, many people in Dak Lak are also very worried and sad because the quality of durian is being affected by the rainy weather.
Mr. Dao Van Nga (residing in Hoa Dong commune, Krong Pak district) said: "My family has 200 durian trees. Of which, 150 trees are being harvested. This year, the family plans to harvest about 15 tons of fruit. Currently, the price of durian has dropped to about 70,000 VND (in 2023, the family sold it for 78,000 VND/kg - PV).
In addition, the rate of damaged durian is quite high (about 20%). The reason is that the recent heavy rains have created favorable conditions for harmful fungi to develop. I have used many measures to prevent fungi from affecting the garden," said Mr. Nga.
According to Mr. Tran Cong Minh - a durian purchasing facility in Krong Pak district, this year, the rate of "drifting goods" (durian with water - PV) is very high. Due to prolonged heavy rain, the durian has excess water in the fruit.
"Every day, my facility buys 10 - 50 tons of "floating" durian, with prices ranging from 35,000 - 41,000 VND/kg. This price is half lower than that of durian with good quality and beautiful appearance," Mr. Minh added.
