Like a miracle

I happened to meet Truong Thuy Hoan My on a day at the end of 2024, at Vun Art Cooperative - a facility producing handicrafts from scrap silk in Van Phuc silk village, Ha Dong, Hanoi.

When I arrived, My was very busy with her job as a bartender. The small corner shop in front of the factory is both a place to display handicraft products and sell drinks. This business model is a new activity of Vun that has just been implemented not long ago.

I was a little surprised to see that My was not disabled like the other members here. It turns out that with such a special working community, there is a great need for people who are physically and mentally healthy enough to help them in many situations.

Truong Thuy Hoan My was born in 1989, from Can Tho . She is one of the first members of Vun Art, a skilled, intelligent, and creative master craftsman. She was highly appreciated and praised by artist Dang Thi Khue.

My is always the one who helps the new disabled students at Vun, guiding them meticulously in everything, both in each stage of production and in activities related to life skills.

Helping others simply is easy, but helping the disadvantaged with all the love and understanding is something that not everyone can do. Not only does it take a lot of effort, but it also requires tolerance and patience. Perhaps My can do that because her husband is also severely disabled. Understanding her husband makes it easier to sympathize with people in the same situation.

American couple on their wedding day

The story of the American couple is a beautiful love story that is hard to believe can happen in real life. It is hard to believe that it started with a "virtual" relationship, that is, the two people met on social networks. It is even harder to believe that a young girl, knowing that the guy is disabled, lives thousands of kilometers away from her, but still decided to choose him.

That year, the girl from the West, Truong Thuy Hoan My, was a first-year student at Can Tho Medical College. Nguyen Quang Trung, a Hanoi boy born in 1983, used to be a police officer, but after an accident, Trung broke his cervical vertebrae, leading to quadriplegia. Knowing his situation, My felt sorry for him, admired him, and fell in love without realizing it. She decided to go to the North to visit Trung and immediately determined a long-term relationship.

After a long-distance relationship for several years, after My graduated, they got married. Of course, My's choice met with a lot of disagreement from her relatives. No parents wanted their beloved daughter to embark on a path that they knew would be very difficult, even painful. But in the end, with her sincerity, My convinced them.

A young girl who married into another country, at first encountered many difficulties in terms of both cultural differences and job opportunities. My also changed jobs several times for many reasons but finally found a relationship with Vun and has been with her until now.

Perhaps few people can fully understand what life is like for people with spinal cord injuries. It cannot be like normal people, not even like other people with disabilities. There are many sensitive issues that are difficult to share, there are many complexes that are difficult to talk about. Even sex, the most simple happiness that nature bestows on married life, for them, that happiness is eight parts lacking, unable to be complete.

Surely many people will wonder why My chose to go down such a bumpy road. In an era where most people live very pragmatically, coming together with many calculations of gains and losses, winning and losing, what made a girl who was not ignorant, nor not beautiful, make such a disadvantageous choice? When asked, My replied: I can't explain why, probably because of love (laughs).

Current American Family

Perhaps she was right, a love big enough to fill the gaps, that love finally bore fruit. Their little son will enter 7th grade next school year, 2025-2026. Although he was not born in the normal way, having to be intervened by in vitro fertilization, he grew up healthy and very intelligent and smart.

Now, after more than ten years, My is still happy with her small family. She is also satisfied and happy with her job at Vun. Maybe for many people, that happiness is small, normal, nothing worth mentioning. But for My and her husband, it is different, it is a miracle. Like a miracle, but miracles do not come naturally. It is the result of a lot of effort, of the persistent cultivation of love.

A love that is big enough, rich in sacrifice, and not tinged with calculation, is itself a miracle.
