The idea of raising spotted deer was hatched by Mr. Binh more than 10 years ago. At that time, Mr. Binh thought that simply raising traditional animals such as pigs, cows, etc. would be very unstable and the income would not be enough to live on.

After that, Mr. Binh went online to search for high-income livestock models and accidentally found that raising spotted deer was very successful in Ha Tinh. Without hesitation, Mr. Binh decided to return to Ha Tinh to research and learn deer raising techniques, care processes, and antler harvesting methods. After many days of living in Ha Tinh, Mr. Binh was captivated by the spotted deer farming model and decided to pursue it.

In 2021, after selling his family's land, Mr. Binh invested in building a barn and bought 25 male and female sika deer to raise with a total cost of more than 800 million VND. Mr. Binh said that sika deer are very easy to raise and his family has almost no difficulty in caring for them.

“Sika deer are animals with good resistance and rarely get sick. In particular, taking care of sika deer requires little investment because the main food source is from the wild such as elephant grass, corn, beans, agricultural waste, etc., so the family puts in the effort,” Mr. Binh shared.

According to Mr. Binh, a male deer raised for 9-10 months will start to produce velvet, each harvest will yield about 1 kg of velvet, the average price is from 18 - 20 million VND/kg. Meanwhile, a female deer will start to reproduce after 2 years old, about 1 litter per year, a pair of breeding deer over 6 months old costs over 40 million VND.

“In the first batch, the family sold more than 300 million VND worth of deer breeds and nearly 200 million VND worth of deer antlers. After more than a year, the family recovered their capital and continued to expand the model to increase income. Currently, the family's sika deer herd has about 25 females and 15 males. After deducting all investment costs, the profit is about 600 million VND," Mr. Binh shared.

Mr. Binh added that the sika deer in the Kon Tum market still does not have a stable output, and the family business is still spontaneous. However, fortunately for the family, after the sika deer were posted for sale online and brought to Hanoi and Vinh Phuc for relatives to use, many people knew about the quality of the product and ordered more and more.

To make his wish come true, Mr. Binh said that his family is willing to share their experience in raising spotted deer, provide breeds as well as support the output market for the people. Only then will the spotted deer farming profession truly develop strongly in Kon Tum and become known to many people.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thuy, Vice Chairman of Kon Ray District People's Committee, said that Mr. Binh is considered a pioneer in raising spotted deer in Kon Ray District and has brought about efficiency. From Mr. Binh's spotted deer raising model, some households of ethnic minorities in Dak To Lung commune have invested in expanding and have been very successful.

“Through a review of the area, the district has assessed and identified a number of effective agricultural development models, including deer farming. Therefore, the District People's Committee has directed departments, branches and localities to organize the replication of these models to create jobs and increase income for people, especially ethnic minorities in the area,” Mr. Thuy informed.

“I hope that many households in the area will join together to raise spotted deer. Then, the source of deer antlers will be more abundant, and I will buy them back from the people to supply to pharmaceutical companies that are currently lacking raw materials for this type of product,” said Nguyen Van Binh.
