On January 24, during the last class before the Lunar New Year holiday, Vu Minh Duc (grade 12 Math 2 student, Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted) burst into tears when he learned that he scored 98.61/100 points in the thinking assessment test of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. This is also the highest score since Bach Khoa organized the thinking assessment test.
“I was surprised that I didn’t expect to get such a high score. Before that, I didn’t have high expectations because I hadn’t studied much this time. Therefore, I took the exam with the mindset of trying my best, thinking that I would take the exam 1 or 2 more times,” Minh Duc shared.
Originally a “natural person”, with an older brother studying in the 4th year of the Automation major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology , Minh Duc gradually fell in love with the University and set a goal to take the Computer Science exam. Planning early to prepare for this exam, Duc often spent the day studying in class, and in the evening practicing more questions to get used to the structure and types of questions.
Although the structure of the exam is quite different from the high school graduation exam, the male student is not too worried because "when you understand the essence, you will definitely do well". Therefore, when learning anything new, Duc often thinks about understanding the essence of the problem, from there expanding to the types of questions that can still be done.
Not taking any extra classes during his three years of high school, Duc focused mainly on completing the homework assigned by his teachers in class and searching for materials online to study. For the thinking assessment exam, Duc only studied from the school's handbook.
“I think that just doing well what the teachers instruct in class is enough to pass the exam, there is no need to study anywhere else. The important thing is to pay attention and concentrate when in class and know how to arrange reasonable rest time.” Duc said that he usually focuses on studying between 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., and does not stay up too late.

With a score of 98.61, including the maximum score in Math, Duc said that studying Math also gave him many advantages. He was trained a lot in mathematical thinking, so he saved time on the test. Most of the math questions were not difficult for the male student.
However, the parts that make me most worried are Reading Comprehension and Science. “These are strange contents, I haven’t practiced much so I’m still struggling. There are many ideas that I can’t find clear evidence for in the text so I’m often unsure when doing them. With this content, I think I need to learn how to analyze and link information,” Duc said.

Before achieving the highest score in the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's thinking assessment exam, Duc also achieved many high results in natural sciences. A week ago, the male student won second prize in the provincial math exam. Duc always maintained his position in the top 1, 2, 3 in the school exams; his average score in natural sciences was almost perfect, with an IELTS score of 6.5.
However, what impressed Ms. Nguyen Thuy Linh, Duc's homeroom teacher, about Duc was that he was a student with good thinking, hard work, and determination to achieve his goals.
In early August this year, while playing soccer at school, Duc unfortunately broke his arm and had to wear a cast for over a month. Although he could not take notes, Duc did not miss any class. The male student shared that even though he could not take notes, he still wanted to go to class so he could listen to the teacher's lectures more carefully.
In addition, no matter what subject he studies, Duc is very confident, studies the theory carefully, and if he has any questions, he will ask the teacher immediately to understand the nature of the problem.
“This is probably Duc’s biggest advantage. He has to go to the core of everything to deepen his knowledge. When Duc took the exam, the teacher predicted that he would get a high score but didn’t think it would be that high. This result is worthy of Duc’s determination and learning attitude,” Ms. Linh shared.
With this score, Minh Duc hopes to be admitted to the Computer Science major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology this year.
