On the afternoon of January 1, after receiving orders from the Navy Command, Submarine Brigade 189 quickly and urgently made preparations for Ship 991 to depart quickly to carry out its mission.
Despite the big waves (level 6, level 7), with the level, courage and experience accumulated through many times of performing rescue missions at sea, Ship 991 quickly approached the distressed ship. The location of the distressed Petrolimex 11 ship made a rope. After agreeing on a plan with Ship Petrolimex 11, at 10:00 p.m. the same day, Ship 991 organized to tow the Petrolimex 11 ship to the anchorage area.

Lieutenant Colonel Dinh Van Thuong, Deputy Chief of Staff, Brigade 189 Navy, directly commanding Ship 991 to carry out the mission, said: This is the first time Ship 991, Squadron 418 has carried out a rescue mission on a ship with such a large tonnage. Although we determined that this was an extremely difficult mission, due to complex weather conditions, we always determined that the rescue mission is a key and extremely important task, regardless of any circumstances, including big waves, strong winds, and even worse weather, we are still ready to receive and determined to complete the mission well.
Petrolimex 11 ship has a tonnage of over 40 thousand tons, length 175.9m, width 31m, with 25 crew members on board. Petrolimex 11 ship, carrying goods for Vitaco company from Malaysia port to Hon Gai port, Ha Long city, Quang Ninh province. When the ship reached the sea area about 20 nautical miles southeast of Cam Ranh city, Khanh Hoa province, the steering system broke down, losing the ability to maneuver.
After nearly 12 hours of towing, at 10:10 a.m. on January 2, officers and soldiers of Ship 991 successfully rescued Ship Petrolimex 11 to the anchorage area in Vinh Tan commune, Tuy Phong district, Binh Thuan province safely.
