Salivary gland stones are deposits and accumulations of inorganic and organic components in the salivary glands or in the salivary gland ducts.

They block and obstruct the flow of saliva. It can partially or completely block the salivary duct into the mouth, preventing the flow of saliva into the mouth, causing pain and discomfort. In case of large stones, they can block the salivary duct, leading to inflammation of the duct, glandular abscess, etc.

Patient NVT (60 years old, Phu Tho) came to the hospital with symptoms of pain and swelling in the left submandibular region that lasted for a week. The swelling tended to gradually increase in size, especially when chewing.

At Phu Tho General Hospital, after being examined by maxillofacial doctors, the patient was diagnosed with left submandibular salivary gland inflammation due to stones and was assigned surgery to remove the stones.

After treatment, the patient recovered well, no longer felt any pain or swelling and was discharged from the hospital.

Doctor Nguyen Van Thuy, maxillofacial department, Phu Tho General Hospital, said that salivary gland inflammation due to stones is a dangerous disease if not examined and treated promptly.

The loose tissue in the floor of the mouth and parotid area causes the infection to spread very quickly, even spreading to the neck and chest, causing airway compression, potentially leading to death.

Meanwhile, surgery to remove salivary gland stones requires meticulousness and experience from the doctor. Sometimes the stones are small and lie deep in the salivary gland tissue, making the stone removal process difficult.

The surgical incision may be made inside the mouth or through an incision on the skin of the face, depending on the location of the stone and the associated medical condition. If the salivary gland is chronically inflamed and fibrotic, the entire salivary gland may need to be removed.

"Proactive health care and timely treatment will help avoid dangerous complications caused by salivary gland stones. Do not ignore the early signs, because early intervention can help protect your own health," Dr. Thuy advised.

When to see a doctor?

According to doctors at Vietnam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital, salivary stones often do not cause symptoms when they are in the forming stage.

When the stone is large or the gland is completely blocked by the stone, symptoms such as stone obstruction causing swelling and pain in the gland, especially after eating, stimulating salivation. Symptoms may subside after a few hours.

Some cases of stones cause only intermittent symptoms or no symptoms at all.

In addition, salivary gland stones can also manifest as a mass under the tongue, pain or swelling in the submandibular area or on both sides in front of the ears, and pain that increases when eating.

Salivary stones can also sometimes lead to infections in or around the affected gland. Symptoms of infection may include fever with acute inflammation or an abscess, even pus forming around the stone. Swollen lymph nodes under the jaw on the same side may…

When seeing the above symptoms, patients should go to medical facilities for timely examination and treatment.
