Dang My Temple is located deep at the end of a small road in Binh Tay Hamlet, Tan Binh Commune, Tan Tru District, Long An Province. The small temple is located right next to the Dang My Canal junction, from where you can go to Tan An City and Tan Tru Town by waterway. In the temple yard is an ancient banyan tree over 200 years old.
The banyan tree is large, with a base circumference of up to 14m, its branches and leaves spread out to shade the entire temple area. The tree has an ancient, unique shape with many roots larger than an arm can hug.
Binh Tay people are proud of the ancient banyan tree in their hometown. Mr. Nguyen Tan Quoc (Party Cell Secretary, Head of the Front Work Committee of Binh Tay Hamlet) said: “No one knows exactly when this temple and banyan tree were built here, but they have an important meaning for the people in the hamlet. Although it is located in a rather remote location, for many years, Binh Tay people have taken care of and protected the temple and the old banyan tree as an indispensable part of the community.”
According to the elderly living in Binh Tay hamlet, in the past, the temple and banyan tree area was sparsely populated and the terrain was dense.
Along both sides of the canal, water coconut trees grow densely and were once a revolutionary base during the anti-American period. With a favorable location for waterways and sheltered by a hundred-year-old banyan tree, the Dang My temple area was often the place where we “hid our troops” before and after attacks.
The ancient tree - the old banyan tree in the Dang My temple yard has a base circumference of up to 14m. This ancient tree in Binh Tay hamlet, Tan Binh commune, Tan Tru district, Long An province is about 200 years old.
Local people still tell each other that the banyan tree at Dang My temple is a "witness" to the heroic fighting spirit and the losses and sacrifices of our cadres and soldiers during the days of fighting for independence.
That is also one of the reasons why the small temple is respected and preserved by the people until today. The old banyan tree in the temple yard has become a symbol closely associated with the lives of the people of Binh Tay hamlet.
According to Vice Chairman of Tan Tru District People's Committee - Truong Minh Tri, the banyan tree at Dang My Temple is the first tree in Tan Tru district to be recognized as a Vietnamese Heritage Tree.
The banyan tree not only has landscape value but is also closely associated with the lives of the people as well as the revolutionary struggles of the people of Binh Tay hamlet, Tan Binh commune in particular, and Tan Tru district in general.
At the recent ceremony to recognize the Vietnam Heritage Tree, Mr. Truong Minh Tri asked the Heritage Tree Management Board as well as local people to pay attention to taking care of the banyan tree to improve the landscape as well as preserve and promote local cultural values.
A changing countryside
The banyan tree at Dang My temple is the first Vietnamese Heritage Tree of Tan Tru district, Long An province.
Vice Chairman of Tan Binh Commune People's Committee - Nguyen Thanh Trung said: "The care and protection of the local heritage banyan tree will be associated with the education of revolutionary traditions, history and culture for the younger generation. The heritage banyan tree is like a "witness" to the tradition of solidarity and heroism of the local people during the resistance war. And that tradition has been preserved and promoted to this day. That is proven by the fact that the Party Committee, the government and the people of Tan Binh have united together to successfully build an advanced new rural commune".
Becoming an advanced NTM commune, Tan Binh has clear changes, bringing a new look from rural infrastructure to environmental landscape. 100% of commune roads are maintained annually, with full necessary items such as signs, directional signs, speed bumps. 80% of commune roads have lighting, trees and trash cans. 100% of agricultural land area is actively irrigated.
The material and spiritual life of the people has improved; poverty reduction and gratitude policies have been well implemented. More than 99% of households have houses that meet technical standards as prescribed by the Ministry of Construction. Average income per capita has reached more than 68 million VND/year, the multidimensional poverty rate of the commune is 0.58%. Education and health care continue to develop; social order is ensured; the environment is clean,...
The achievements in successfully building an advanced NTM commune in Tan Binh have created excitement among the people, contributing to further tightening the close relationship between the Party, the government and the local people. Party Cell Secretary, Head of the Front Work Committee of Binh Tay Hamlet - Nguyen Tan Quoc shared: “Since successfully building a new rural commune and an advanced NTM commune, the people have become more unanimous. In just 3 months, the commune mobilized all the people living along the road connecting Provincial Road 833C with Dang My Street to agree to donate land to widen the road. Not only did they donate land, but they also contributed funds. The road is under construction, 1.2km long and 5m wide. When the State and the People work together, anything is possible!”
