According to Russian reports, the Ukrainian balloons were equipped with GPS modules and carried explosives. However, it is still unclear what type of balloons were used, as well as how exactly they worked.

In addition to using airships, Ukraine has also stepped up drone strikes on targets far behind Russian lines. However, they are struggling as military support from the West, especially from the United States, is dwindling.

Kiev fears Russia could launch a major offensive next month and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is calling on European Union leaders and Western partners to provide more air defence equipment to Ukraine.

Russia added that in addition to the balloon, they also intercepted two tactical missiles, 19 rockets and 16 drones that same night. On the Ukrainian side, the country's air force also shot down all 13 drones launched by Russia into Ukraine.

Experts fear that the use of balloons could lead to an escalation of tensions, especially as Russia could use strong countermeasures, raising the risk of further conflict escalation.
