Dr. KH Doan Huong: "Ngoc Trinh is truly the queen of scandal"

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí11/10/2023

Recently, Ngoc Trinh caused a stir on social media when she posted many videos of her riding a large-displacement motorbike, including images of her with her hands down, lying down, and kneeling on the saddle. After the accident and facing a wave of protests, on October 9, Ngoc Trinh still declared that she would continue to pursue her passion for "speed".

This makes public opinion see her as someone who does not know how to admit her mistakes, is stubborn and lacks legal knowledge.

Dan Tri reporter had a conversation with Doctor of Literature Doan Huong to listen to the expert's perspective on Ngoc Trinh's noisy incident.

"Ngoc Trinh's fall was a slap in the face"

Recently, a video of Ngoc Trinh riding a large-displacement motorbike showed her with her hands down, lying down, kneeling on the saddle and injured. In your opinion, is this a joke, a disregard for the law by this girl?

- This is Ngoc Trinh's tragicomedy. She probably intended to turn herself into a character in the movie "Girl and Speed" but the work ended too soon, making everyone laugh. Ngoc Trinh's fall is a slap in the face to her and to those who want to imitate her as a "highway hero".

Ngoc Trinh is truly the "queen of scandals", because to drive a large motorbike, one must practice for a whole year, and even those who are proficient at it don't dare to do it. But she even made a video showing it off to the world as if it were some kind of impressive achievement.

Ngoc Trinh did something ridiculous. This girl probably hasn't been mentioned for a long time. She felt that her appeal had decreased, so she did this to advertise herself. Ngoc Trinh should realize her mistake. Riding a motorbike with both hands is a crazy act, disregarding her life and the lives of others.

Her recent actions were illegal, so Thu Duc City Police (HCMC) has drawn up a record to fine Ngoc Trinh.

Ngoc Trinh's personal page has many followers, and she herself has many fans. In your opinion, is Ngoc Trinh's recent incident serious and has a big impact on young people?

- Ngoc Trinh lives in Ho Chi Minh City - a place that is quite culturally open. If she lived in Hanoi, she probably wouldn't be able to "do whatever she wants".

Ngoc Trinh has built her "brand" well: Always showing off that she is rich, has many lovers... She is attractive to many people because she is "strange", she has a lifestyle that is "neither Vietnamese nor Western" but is the "idol" of many people.

Ngoc Trinh’s recent actions have greatly influenced young people. Ngoc Trinh has crossed the limits. But she will not be praised forever because how can she make a living from her career without making any positive contributions to the community?

Young people today are also very smart. They have creative thinking and do not chase after the "underwear queen" Ngoc Trinh. The act of riding a large motorbike, letting go of both hands, lying down and kneeling on the saddle like a Hollywood actor will not be highly appreciated.

Ngoc Trinh has always been a controversial figure in both her statements and actions. Why do you think she has not learned from the previous series of criticisms?

- Not only Ngoc Trinh but many people are not qualified enough to know whether what they say and do is right or wrong. Like some online gangsters, they go on social networks to brag about their bad achievements but think they are good.

Our ancestors used to say "show the beautiful, cover the ugly", but many people go against this. They are "blinded" by illusions and false praise, so they don't know what a bad example they are.

Ngoc Trinh thinks she is famous but in fact, she doesn't know who she is. Her statements are instinctive, not carefully crafted but she thinks she is good.

Surely, she will be affected by these statements. In fact, she is not a star but a person with many scandals.

Miss crowned is equivalent to a game show

Someone exclaimed "Vietnamese showbiz is in chaos now" when seeing the phenomenon of many characters intentionally creating scandals, intentionally making themselves famous by doing things that are different from the crowd. Is Vietnamese showbiz really "in chaos", madam?

- Saying it's "chaotic" is a bit too much, because showbiz still develops according to that rule? But artists with offensive and deviant behavior and statements will be condemned. For artists, talent is the most important thing, like singers must sing well, they can't use choreography to cover up their bad singing voice. Talented artists "naturally attract people", they don't need scandals to be famous and do well in their profession.

If they continue to make nonsense statements and promote false advertising, they will be boycotted. Talent will be recognized by the public, not by being famous through noise.

There are many people who live as parasites in showbiz, do not create artistic values, do not contribute anything but are still praised by the audience. In your opinion, is this due to the easygoing audience or the tricks of celebrities?

- Our audience is also quite strict, many people have suggested "banning" some artists who violate the standards. But the audience has many classes, in addition to those with expertise, intellectuals, and standard cultural backgrounds, there are also audiences with normal education levels.

The younger the audience, the less prepared they are to receive information. There are audiences in high school, aged 12 to 18, who are ready to praise people like Ngoc Trinh. For them, anything strange is good.

This is a group of audiences who do not have fixed tastes. Today they praise this person, tomorrow they are ready to "throw stones" at that person. The person who is praised and praised by the young generation is not necessarily the one who has contributed to music and fine arts.

Many people are called singers but the audience doesn’t know what songs they have sung. They use their names to participate in game shows, attend events… to earn extra income, but when they are not doing art, they quickly disappear.

From idolizing models and singers, young audiences now idolize beauty queens. But there are many people who were crowned the day before, but the next day the audience questioned whether they used laughing gas, did not graduate from high school, or were involved in school violence... What do you think about this?

- In foreign countries, beauty pageants are also considered entertainment programs, just game shows. We should properly evaluate the position of these contests. Currently, beauty pageants are licensed by the local Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism - the place where they are held, so the proliferation of beauty pageants is real.

We should consider these contests as a game show, after the competition we return to normal life, nothing terrible. The beauty queen who gets the crown is equivalent to a game show, not a representative of a country. There are only as many winners as there are game shows.

Once on TV, I said that in the world, people organize beauty pageants like they organize fairs. People who sell dairy cows can become Miss Dairy Cows, those who sell watermelons can become Miss Watermelon or Cabbage… it’s all fine. Our job is to bring beauty pageants back to their proper place.

Actress Cat Tuong recently apologized for being involved in false advertising (Photo: Moc Khai).

Recently, the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism jointly issued a draft to put celebrities who live "out of line" on the "black list", and may even ban them from broadcasting. What do you think about this?

- I welcome this because Vietnamese showbiz needs stability and order, and to do this, there need to be strict regulations to keep artists in line.

We have a Code of Conduct for artists, but it seems that artists are not afraid because there are no strong sanctions to punish them. However, if they are banned from broadcasting, many people will be afraid. Artists are most afraid of being "banned" and not being allowed to appear again.

Many countries such as Korea, China... have successfully "blocked" so we can do it too. I hope that this draft will be implemented soon so that artists can "correct themselves". If they violate many times, I also hope to prosecute them.

In addition to making absurd statements, I find it very inhumane for artists to advertise falsely because innocent people believe in those words, buy the product, some people "lose money and get sick" without being cured, even worse, it is a crime.

Hong Van, Quyen Linh and recently Cat Tuong had to apologize to the audience for false advertising... This is a lesson for other artists who disregard advertising products to make money.

As a long-time cultural worker, what do you think we should do to limit negative events like Ngoc Trinh's recent incident? Will "banning" them make them afraid and help them change their lifestyle?

- I think, to do it thoroughly, there is only the draft of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Information and Communications, only by putting the violating artists on the "black list" and banning them from broadcasting will these phenomena immediately decrease.

Furthermore, the audience also needs to raise awareness to boycott artists who violate the law. We should reject low-quality artistic products and "dirty" videos with negative content to have a healthy cultural space and develop.

Thank you for sharing!
