Because, only with a modern, synchronous transportation network can Long Thanh Airport Phase 1 fully promote investment efficiency.

Airport connection routes gradually taking shape

According to the plan, on August 19, the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway Expansion Project will officially start construction. The 22km expansion of this expressway from the intersection of Ring Road 2 to the intersection with Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway is of particular importance in the plan to exploit Long Thanh Airport in phase 1.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) Vu The Phiet said: According to forecasts, 80% of passengers arriving at Long Thanh Airport will need to travel to Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa. In the initial phase of operation, the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway will play a very important role in meeting this demand.

Regarding the road system, in the traffic connection planning to serve Long Thanh Airport, in addition to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, the Ben Luc - Long Thanh; Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway and Ring Road 3 - Ho Chi Minh City are also the main traffic routes connecting this airport with Ho Chi Minh City. These traffic routes have all been deployed for construction and are scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh assessed: The Ben Luc - Long Thanh, Bien Hoa - Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressways are the main and important traffic routes connecting Long Thanh Airport with Ho Chi Minh City, so it is necessary to speed up the progress, ensuring synchronous completion with the time of exploitation of Long Thanh Airport phase 1.

On the side of Dong Nai province, to serve traffic connection from Long Thanh Airport to the above mentioned main traffic routes, recently, the locality has initiated projects to build, upgrade and expand a number of provincial roads.

Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Tan Duc said: To serve the connection from route T1 (the traffic route connecting the airport) to Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, Ring Road 3 - Ho Chi Minh City, the province is implementing projects to upgrade, expand and build provincial roads: 25B, 25C.

Early investment in connecting railway network

In Notice No. 416/TB-VPCP (dated August 12, 2025), the conclusion of Politburo member and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the Government Office's progress inspection of the Long Thanh Airport Project Phase 1, the Prime Minister assigned the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to coordinate with the Dong Nai Provincial People's Committee to immediately study the underground metro line connecting Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh Airport, and report to the Prime Minister for approval in August 2025.

At a working session with the Government delegation on the progress of the Long Thanh Airport Project in early August, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Tan Duc proposed that the Prime Minister assign the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to study the metro line connecting the two airports.

According to the plan, Long Thanh Airport has a capacity to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo per year in phase 1. When completed, the airport's passenger and cargo capacity will reach 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year.

With such scale, the railway network is considered the solution to the “problem” of serving the needs of transporting passengers and goods for Long Thanh Airport. Therefore, in the planning of the traffic network connecting Long Thanh Airport, a series of railway routes have been planned for investment.

In Notice No. 416/TB-VPCP, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested that the traffic system connecting Long Thanh Airport must be smooth with expressways and railways.

In addition to the North-South high-speed railway route running through the airport center, Long Thanh Airport will have additional railway routes: Thu Thiem - Long Thanh, Bien Hoa - Vung Tau to serve the needs of transporting passengers and goods.

In addition, Dong Nai province has planned to invest in extending the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line from the province center to Long Thanh Airport.
