Echoing the call of history
The historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign in April 1975, after 50 years, remains the pinnacle of Vietnamese bravery and intelligence, ending with a lightning-fast victory, liberating Saigon at noon on April 30.
The image of tanks crashing into the gates of the Independence Palace and at exactly 11:30 a.m., the liberation flag flying over the roof of the Independence Palace, President Duong Van Minh declaring unconditional surrender, ending 21 years of division and opening an era of independence and unity for the Vietnamese people is still intact in the minds of the revolutionary soldiers. It was not only a military victory but also a victory of the will and unity of the entire nation.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of national reunification, veteran Mai Van Duong (residing in Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi) visited the old battlefield and the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of History - where images of the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign are displayed.
Pointing at the black and white photo displayed at the museum, Mr. Duong slowly said that this was his unit - Division 304, Army Corps 2. At exactly 5:00 p.m. on April 26, the Ho Chi Minh Campaign began. Artillery of Army Corps 2, Army Corps 4 and Military Region 7 simultaneously opened fire, pouring firestorms into Trang Bom, Ho Nai, Bien Hoa, Nuoc Trong, Long Thanh, Duc Thanh, Ba Ria...
In the East, the 2nd Corps took charge, the 304th Division attacked the armored school, in less than 2 hours, the Division captured the armored school, part of the Nuoc Trong base.
On the morning of April 28, the 2nd Corps completely destroyed the Nuoc Trong base, destroying and capturing nearly 3,000 enemies, contributing significantly to the victory of the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign.
“When we heard Duong Van Minh declare his surrender, we burst into joy because peace was restored, the country was unified, and the people lived in peace and happiness. I also did not expect that I was one of the millions of people who went through this war and had the luck to witness the final moments of the Saigon puppet regime,” Mr. Duong shared.
The Ho Chi Minh campaign was a complete victory, unifying the country. This victory was built on the foundation of the boundless sacrifices of brave soldiers, and the steadfastness and indomitability of a heroic nation.
Memories passed on to today's generation
Not only the memory of soldiers, the spirit of April 30 is also continued by today's young generation through concrete actions such as studying, creating, preserving the cultural and historical values of the nation with a series of exciting and meaningful activities. From activities to experience historical reenactments, taking photos of love for the country, decorating the national flag at shops and streets, all contribute to arousing pride and connecting the community.
In particular, the atmosphere of training and preparation for the national parade to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025) is also of interest to many people and young people.
In the atmosphere of the heroic days of April, Vu Le Trang Anh (residing in Suoi Da commune, Duong Minh Chau district) who is living and working in Thu Duc city said that in recent days, on the streets, people have eagerly watched the training sessions, preliminary rehearsals and general rehearsals of the armed forces.
Many people went out in the streets wearing red flags with yellow stars. Flags, banners, and welcoming slogans were decorated everywhere, making me feel proud of the national spirit and ready to welcome the country's important holiday.
Being allowed by his parents to visit the Ho Chi Minh Campaign Museum on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day, Nguyen Phan Xuan Nghi (residing in Hiep Tan ward, Hoa Thanh town), currently studying at Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary and High School, was moved and proud to visit and learn about the cultural and historical values, and to feel and reflect on the great sacrifices of previous generations in the struggle for independence and freedom for the country.
“This trip has taught me valuable lessons, awakened my gratitude and responsibility for the future of my country. I am more aware of my responsibility in preserving and promoting the values of my nation, and appreciate the peaceful life we have today more,” Nghi shared.
In addition, to educate revolutionary traditions, many universities in Ho Chi Minh City have also organized many activities such as the campaign "Flowers offered to martyrs' graves"; inviting veterans and historical witnesses to share directly at schools and universities; the special flag-raising ceremony "50 years of united country"...
April is not only an occasion to review history but also an opportunity for every Vietnamese citizen today to be more proud and responsible for the future of the country. The triumphant song of that year still echoes in our hearts, a strong source of motivation for today's youth to follow in the footsteps of their fathers and brothers, building a rich and prosperous Vietnam.
