On the SolarStratos plane taking off from Sion airport, southwest of Switzerland, the pilot made the flight lasting 5 hours and 9 minutes and took advantage of the rising thermal air currents to reach an altitude of 9,521 meters, surpassing the previous record that had stood for 15 years.
The previous altitude record for a solar-powered plane was 9,235 metres, set in 2010. The Solar Impulse plane was also flown by a Swiss pilot, Andre Borschberg.
Pilot Domjan aims to be the first person to fly a solar-powered plane to an altitude of 10,000 metres - the same altitude as passenger planes.
If this limit is overcome, the next goal will be to make the first manned flight using solar energy into the stratosphere, equivalent to an altitude of about 12,000 meters, calculated from the latitude of Switzerland./.
