During a recording of The Overlap podcast with Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and former team-mate Gary Neville, Keane (54) brought along old contracts to share. One of them was shown on camera, revealing some interesting things behind the terms of players' contracts.
Under the contract, Keane's signing fee was to be split over four years, with him receiving £1m each year until the end of the contract. A special clause stipulated that Man Utd had to provide flights for him and his family between Manchester and Cork (Ireland). It stated: "The club will provide 20 return flights between Manchester/Cork/Manchester for the player, his wife and children each year during the term of the contract, commencing from 1 July 2002."
The contract also clearly states the player’s right to play for the national team. During his career, Keane played 67 times for the Republic of Ireland, scoring 9 goals. The clause reads: “The club will allow the player to participate in the national team matches for which he is called up, in accordance with the principles of cooperation between FIFA member associations and clubs.”
However, the contract was not all about the player. Keane also had obligations to the club, including supporting the in-house television channel MUTV. Ironically, it was an interview on MUTV - in which Keane publicly criticised his teammates - that led to his departure from the club.
In addition, Keane must be willing to participate in interviews and take photos “an unlimited number of times”, and agree to allow the club to use his name, nickname, signature, image, voice and likeness for business purposes, especially selling souvenirs.
Roy Keane joined Man Utd from Nottingham Forest in 1993, after a deal with Blackburn Rovers unexpectedly fell through. In the "Red Devils" shirt, he played 480 matches, won 7 Premier League titles and especially the 1999 Champions League.
