Free cleft lip and palate surgery for children in difficult circumstances

On April 15, Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital cooperated with Operation Smile to implement the Smile Surgery Program for nearly 60 children with cleft lip and palate.

On April 15, Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital cooperated with Operation Smile to implement the Smile Surgery Program for nearly 60 children with cleft lip and palate.

Taking place from April 15-18, the program has the participation of medical staff from the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital, medical experts from New Zealand and the Federal Republic of Germany.

During the screening session on April 14 conducted by the hospital for 120 children with cleft lip and palate, nearly 60 cases were eligible for surgery.

Notably, there are many children from the northern mountainous provinces, the central region, remote areas; and children of ethnic minorities in difficult circumstances.

The program includes children with congenital cleft lip and palate who have not had surgery of all ages; cases of sequelae of congenital cleft lip and palate of all ages; cases of extra fingers and toes; children with congenital ptosis over 5 years old; children with other maxillofacial malformations such as hemangiomas, melanomas, and ear malformations.

Eligible cases will be assigned surgery and care according to Vietnamese medical standards and global care standards.

Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital also partially supports the children's expenses during surgery and care at the hospital.

According to specialist doctor II Cao Duc Chinh, Director of the Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Hospital, the hospital is one of the pioneers in performing surgery for children with lip and palate deformities nationwide. Up to now, the unit has gradually perfected the process towards comprehensive treatment of both physical and psychological aspects for children.

During the process of accompanying Operation Smile on the journey to restore smiles to unfortunate children born with facial deformities, the hospital has performed more than 18,000 lip-palate surgeries. On average, each year the hospital coordinates 5-6 surgical programs and performs screening and surgery for about 600 cases.

In the coming time, the hospital will continue to cooperate with Operation Smile in implementing comprehensive treatment for cases of cleft lip and palate.

The hospital will provide full services for receiving and monitoring patients needing surgery from the pregnancy stage, making NAM jaws (removable appliances are custom-made based on each case's jaw), cleft surgery, orthodontics, speech therapy and psychological counseling./.
